$499 Mac computer

p2pnet.net News:- Knowing iPod can’t last forever and under pressure to revive its flagging computer fortunes, Apple will soon unveil a $499 G4-based iMac - sans display.

Fact or fiction?

Fact, says Think Secret. And why not? There’s already a $498 laptop - with display - and a $100 desktop, if you buy 100,000 or more.

"With iPod-savvy Windows users clearly in its sights, Apple is expected to announce a bare bones, G4-based iMac without a display at Macworld Expo on January 11 that will retail for $499, highly reliable sources have confirmed to Think Secret," it states.

"The new Mac, code-named Q88, will be part of the iMac family and is expected to sport a PowerPC G4 processor at a speed around 1.25GHz. The new Mac is said to be incredibly small and will be housed in a flat enclosure with a height similar to the 1.73 inches of Apple’s Xserve. Its size benefits will include the ability to stand the Mac on its side or put it below a display or monitor."

What else will (might? ; ) the headless Mac have? According to Think Secret:

  • 256MB of RAM
  • USB 2.0
  • FireWire 400
  • 10/100 BASE-T Ethernet
  • 56K V.92 modem
  • AirPort Extreme support

It’s about time there was an affordable Apple computer ; -)

I think price is one of the reasons why Mac has become the elite…. that and the fact that PeeCee users “just don’t get it”, nor will they try. Giving someone the option to buy a $500 Mac Vs a $500 PeeCee is only going to flood the Mac community of Mac ignorant, plastic, think alike PeeCee schmucks. If someone wants to use/learn Mac (that has never has) is fine by me… i just don’t want a bunch of whiny little PeeCee bitches telling me “Mac’s to hard to use” or “..well that’s the way i did it on my dell”.

Why is there such aggression between these two groups? Especially from the mac users against the PCers. I also don’t agree with the elitism bullshit. Fanboi

I agree about the aggression thing.

If this is true and Apple does sell a Mac for $499.00 this is a good thing for every one.

We know that the Mac is a better platform than the Windows PC.

We know one of the things that holds the wide spread addoption of the Mac is its high price.

If there were a reasonably priced Mac that people could get you would see a large flux of new Mac users.

There are thousands upon thousands of people that would love to have a Mac but just cant afford the price of one.

(Not refering to your post but an earlier one) This lack of money does not make these people stuppid or winey babbies. It just makes them poorer than others. There are LOTS of very smart people in this world that come from low income back grounds. Why should they be deprived of such a great computer as the Mac just because they make less than $50000.00 a year and have bills to pay and family members to feed and care for.

Also if you make the Mac available to the masses at a reasonable price you will put even more of a hurt on the windows front, thus hopefully pushing Micrsoft to produce a better more stabe and secure OS. And you seed the Mac arena, once people see how good even the low priced Macs work they will be more inclined to save a little so that thay can be sure to get that G5 next year with all the trimmings.
