ShareTV bites the dust
p2pnet.net News:- ShareTV is going down.
“All good things have to come to an end, and unfortunately, here is ours,” says the site.
“Legal issues get more and more problematic, we are not 16 anymore and with the latest developments we found the situation too unstable/unsafe to continue, so we decided it would be better to leave in dignity. The mainpage will be up until the end of the year, the forum will remain open for now. Yet, we will keep it clean, so no ed2k links, only regular chat.
“After we closed the mainpage, we will offer the database as a download for a certain period of time. So please don’t go crazy and try to download the page with some tool. This will only bring the server down.
“This is a sad moment for us, we love what we do and we love our little community. Believe us - we will miss you just as much as you may miss us.
“Bye bye, we hope you enjoyed the ride.”
==================
“Although the legality of sharing TV rips has never been tested in court, it seems almost certain that within the current legal climate that sharing DVD rips of popular TV shows like Stargate SG-1 and Friends would get someone’s attention sooner or later,” writes Brant Truax.
“ShareTV was initially known as BuckTV and has been online for sometime, providing solely rips of TV shows from either broadcast TV or DVDs. The name change took place after a dispute with a former site admin around May of 2004. The site has since provided a wealth of television rips along with an active forum providing users with the opportunity to request show rips, get technical assistance, or just chat with other p2p users. On a positive note, the website will be making its database available to users, so that the wealth of information contained on the site is not lost.
“It would appear that the MPAA’s tactics are having an initial amount of limited success in closing down sites without directly applying legal pressure or taking admins to court. With the possibility of jail time and raids on their homes, many ED2K and BitTorrent websites simply don’t think it’s worth the risk or effort of fighting it out in court.
“Until someone decides that it is worth it to stick it out in court, which the operator of Sharereactor (Simon Moon) and shareconnector may, we can probably expect more of the same.”
