Adobe unveils Acrobat 7.0

p2pnet.net News:- Adobe has announced the release of Adobe Acrobat 7.0.

And the update comes with a free public beta version for Linux, which you can download here.

“Users can participate in document reviews, have Yahoo! Search capabilities at their fingertips and can interact with 3D objects placed in PDF,” it states.

Acrobat 7.0 Professional and Acrobat 7.0 Standard for Windows 2000 (with service pack 2), Windows XP Professional, Home and Tablet PC Editions, and Mac OS X v10.2.8 and v10.3 are available now in English. French, German and Japanese language versions are expected to be available in early 2005. The estimated street price is $450.

Registered users of Acrobat 4.0, 5.0 and 6.0 Standard, or Acrobat 6.0 Professional, can upgrade to Acrobat 7.0 Professional for an estimated street price of US$160.

Acrobat 7.0 Standard has an estimated street price of US$300, Adobe goes on. Registered users of Acrobat 4.0, Acrobat 5.0 or Acrobat 6.0 Standard can upgrade to Acrobat 7.0 Standard for an estimated street price of US$100.

The company also wants to offer customers, “assurances of persistent confidentiality, privacy and accountability inside and outside the firewall” with its new DRM Adobe LiveCycle Policy Server, “Tightly integrated with Adobe Acrobat 7.0 and Adobe Reader 7.0″.

Interesting phrase, “persistent confidentiality”.

Adobe LiveCycle allows organizations to manage document policies by deciding who can view a PDF document, and whether or not recipients can modify, copy, print or forward the document.

“Through integration with standard LDAP-based authentication and identity management infrastructures for centralized document control, the software provides assurances that only intended recipients can open a protected document,” says the company.

“The permissions on these documents also can be changed or revoked, regardless of how many copies were distributed or where the documents reside.”

Does that look good to you?

Adobe security has a price, and it starts at $50,000.

It would be nice (and quite professional) to mention that one must “Apply” for the privilage (log-in, password, etc.) with No Gaurantee you will be allowed the “beta” download.

To wit: “Please note that this invitation does not guarantee that you will be approved for this Pre-Release program. Pre Release candidates are selected on the basis of background information obtained from enrollment data. Hence, it is important that you fill out complete and accurate information at the time of registration……..”

This is good news? Proprietary hogwash. IMHO…….eom
