Free Microsoft anti-spyware app
p2pnet.net News:- Better late than never, is about where it’s at with Microsoft’s release of its new beta anti-spyware and malware application. And a malicious software removal tool is also expected later this month.
“A crucial part of Windows AntiSpyware will be SpyNet, a network of PC users around the world that reports on spyware that needs to be blocked,” says vnunet.com. “The network was set up by Giant and Microsoft and is calling for members worldwide to join free of charge.
“Microsoft will also release a tool that eliminates common viruses. It is designed to augment rather than replace traditional antivirus systems and is based on GeCAD technology, a Romanian antivirus company Microsoft bought in 2003.”
p2pnet reader Dave O’Hare has tried Microsoft’s latest and is both impressed and puzzled.
“It basically does a half decent job,” he says. “It found 6 things that Ad-Aware didn’t. Appears to slow down the internet when it’s running in ‘real-time protection’ mode, so I disabled that feature.
“But. two things struck me as odd.
“The first was the atrocious spelling in the various commands (you’d think they’d use some sort of ’spell-check’)!
“The second was in the ‘advanced tools/tracks eraser’ option. It basically deletes the history/cookies/cache from various programs. MediaPlayer, IE, etc. Quite a lot. But it doesn’t delete any ‘tracks’ from Netscape (which I use). However….it does delete the ‘Kazaa file search history’…………”
Makes you say, “mmmmmmm”!
It do.
We’ll stick with SpyBot Search & Destroy, and GRiSoft’s free AVG Anti-Virus app.
Stay tuned.
