Thanks, folks …
Hi all:
Since Monday when I said I’d run out of gas, nine people have donated $340.05 in amounts varying from $2.00 to $100.
Thanks.
The guys at Frostwire will be there, as always, and I’m waiting to hear back from TekSavvy. But they’ve always been in p2pnet’s corner and I’m keeping my fingers crossed that nothing has changed there either.
Yesterday I was contacted by an advertising company which looks as though it might be a fit with p2pnet. I’ll be speaking with them a little later and I’ll let you know how it works out. You never know. And I’ve been shaking the trees in other areas.
Trying to scam people
On Monday I said I’d had one nasty email. Basically, it accused me of trying to scam people by pretending to close down when really, I’m raking it in from donations. I’ve had a couple more since then saying pretty much the same.
Yes, when my sponsor and two major advertisers pulled out, I rang the alarm bell. Then soon afterward I said I’d probably be staying up after all. That was because I thought I’d been able to arrange a second mortgage. But it fell through and now I’m back where I started in terms of having (no) money available.
However, I want to make it clear that thanks to Cliff Haerden, my new host who runs multibox.be over in Belgium, whatever else happens, or doesn’t happen, the site will stay online so existing content will still be available, with or without ads.
And I still haven’t given up.
p2pnet Mark II
Even if I’m not posting, there are still quite a few emails to answer.
For example, I’ve said a couple of times I’ve had a project in mind which would be a kind of p2pnet Mark II and someone asked why I haven’t gone into detail.
I’d love to share it and get readers involved, and it’s not you guys who are stopping me.
Honestly, I’m afraid one or more of the empty eyed corporate sharks with lots of money and no morals will chomp it up. But if I can figure out a way, I’ll post on it.
How does that song go? Doop, doop, doop, doop, Staying Alive, staying alive …
Heh
Cheers! Jon Newton

Not looking to start an argument, but I can’t help wondering what happened to the advertiser whose name starts with “G”. You know, the one which supposedly isn’t banned from being mentioned in the comments, but whose name will cause any comment containing it to disappear without a trace.
Was there some issue or did they simply decide to cut the advertising budget?
February 3rd, 2010 at 1:42 pm
Having been around here beyond a day or two, I think I can answer what happened to the advertiser. At one time Jon had ads from that supplier. However that supplier looks at how many ads are viewed and how many actually buy something as a result. Somewhere along the line, one of Jon’s less and honest admirers started a campaign to click away without ever buying anything and the ad supplier took up it’s infamous “click fraud” clause. There seems to be no redress, no way to prove your innocence, and don’t you dare mention it in public eyes or you get blackballed.
A summation as I understand it…

Provocative website p2pnet.net, the online voice of one of the world’s most blistering and perpetual attacks on the Recording Industry Association of America, is shuttering amid financial doldrums. It’s been vocal for nine years.
“I can’t claim p2pnet has been protecting the world, but I’ve done my best to unspin some of the vested interest corporate spin, and expose a few of the lies and corruption,” the site’s voice and founder Jon Newton said in his “last post” Wednesday.
The Vancouver Island, British Columbia, huckster is looking for donations or even a partnership in hopes of reviving the site that has become infamous for its mocking portrayal of the RIAA, which consists of Vivendi Universal, Sony BMG, EMI and Warner Music.
While Newton mocked the Motion Picture Association of America, the site is best remembered for referring to the RIAA as the “Big 4 Organized Music Cartel,” the “Multi-Billion-Dollar Big 4 Record Companies,” “Hate Organizations,” the “U.S. Spin Organization” and the “Curiously Named Recording Industry Association of America.”
Under the umbrella of the RIAA, the group the past six years has launched tens of thousands of lawsuits against file sharing individuals. Most settled out of court for a few thousand dollars while the two who went to trial were ordered to pay $1.92 million and $675,000. Just last week, a judge reduced the $1.92 million figure to $54,000 for sharing 24 songs on Kazaa.
“They hate anything which interfered with what they see as their God-given right to control how, and by whom, music is distributed online,” Newton wrote in a recent blog post. “They even hate the people who keep them in drugs and booze and who pay their bills.”

How do you explain why Torrentfreak, Slyck and Zeropaid, three of the most respected P2P sites, are not bothering to carry news of your ‘demise’?
February 3rd, 2010 at 4:34 pm
How do *you* explain it, Watcher?
February 3rd, 2010 at 5:44 pm
“On Monday I said I’d had one nasty email. Basically, it accused me of trying to scam people by pretending to close down when really, I’m raking it in from donations. I’ve had a couple more since then saying pretty much the same.”
Jon you know what? I just realized that there is only one website for which I don’t use any shortcut: p2pnet.net
You know why? because I am visiting the site so often that I have no problem renumbering the url. This is how important your site is for me.
Now concerning the nasty Emails don’t worry about it. There is always a small minority of nasty people around who believe that others people are as evil as they are themselves. When someone accuse you of doing something you would not have though off it is because the same person did or is doing exactly the same thing they are accusing you of doing. This is where these kind of people got they stuff from: themselves!
This is the problem with the music corporations who accumulated a lot of such nasty and criminal people.

“How do you explain why Torrentfreak, Slyck and Zeropaid, three of the most respected P2P sites, are not bothering to carry news of your ‘demise’?”
From what I understand Jon and Tom from Slyck don’t get along, so it’s no surprise there. I can’t speak for Torrentfreak or Zeropaid.
February 3rd, 2010 at 7:08 pm
@ Monkey D. Luffy:
I’m fine with Zeropaid. In fact, Jared Moya is a friend – a really good writer who knows which way is up.
Slyck? The name says it all.
TorrentFreak? I think we now have divergent viewpoints.
Cheers!
February 3rd, 2010 at 7:10 pm
There have been 6 posts since the supposed “last (ever) post” including one called “Thanks folks – staying online” so maybe there’s not a story there after all
Thank goodness, there is a god
nice one p2pnet, hang in there
February 3rd, 2010 at 7:15 pm
Thanks Jon! I didn’t doubt there was a reasonable explanation.
February 3rd, 2010 at 9:26 pm
Good luck to you Jon, in whatever happens with your site, I have read many of your stories. First of all, there is NO forum compared to Slyck, Slyck is the absolute best and always will be. As for Zeropaid, they are not even in the same league. I do read TorrentFreak they do have good stories. Slyck has great news submitters who don’t miss much, and I read earlier that the closing of P2PNet IS posted on Slyck, so to “Watcher” above, you must not be watching very close. Again, good luck to you Jon, thanks for all your efforts.
February 3rd, 2010 at 10:05 pm
I believe the point “Watcher” was making is that those particular sites did not generate a story relating to this one, merely aggregating news from sites that did is not really a “mention” or mark of respect is it now.
I can vouch for the good folks at Zeropaid when it comes to actually creating stories and doing the homework that goes with them, they are very approachable and not full of themselves when you have a story outline that may be of interest.
I also enjoy reading the stories at TorrentFreak, althought TF’s comments columns are clearly left full of trolls to stimulate more visits per user as fighting rages on, its not hard to ensure the same person cannot post from the same IP under a multitude of names, yes that does annoy..lol
The register is a UK based tech news site thats mainly anti filesharing but does throw a few cheap shots now and then that mock the “rightholders” stance, whirlpool forums are the Australian based p2p talking shop , and theinquirer (.net) provides yet another take on many of the same stories we read doing the rounds.
If your an Open-Nap user who also uses the news groups then Slycks is the place for you, if you want a central place to find stories it may pass muster but dont expect to say anything much that the mods wont agree with or you,ll become one of the “disappeared”, so thats my recommendations if your deciding to stray from the path here into uncharted waters.
Alternatively you could simply toss out a few dollars at the end of this week to keep Jon hard at the wheel.

@Quartz:
Watcher has been here before. S/he’s a troll or a shill, I’m not sure which. Ignore.
Cheers!
February 3rd, 2010 at 10:39 pm
Quartz, there are good folks everywhere, and if someone is expecting total respect, in my book, that’s earned, and the story IS there to see regardless if it is not a personally written story that someone may not have had time to do, mention of that is actually childish on your part. Zeropaid members love to mention negativity about Slyck everywhere they can, this is not a new thing (check back a few years and read, and I have been reading for several years myself), but I never see it on Slyck in the opposite manner about ZP, now what does that say to you? I am even a tad bit disappointed in Jon’s comment, sorry, but this site closing (or not closing) has nothing to do with Slyck or Zeropaid or TorrentFreak. Also, if there are some ZP people that got removed from Slyck, I would guess it was for a for a good reason and therefore I deem it not necessary to even discuss here or anywhere. Many of these comments simply have nothing to do with P2PNet or Jon. I would have never commented here, other than to thank Jon, had it not been for the negative comments here to begin with. It simply is ridiculous and shallow to even go any further. I wish Jon all the best, he is to be thanked AGAIN for all his efforts, but please, leave opinions out of this topic that are not related. As for uncharted waters, I disagree, and all the more reason why my opinion has just been verified that Slyck will continue to be the best. No offense intended here, but to allow further comments or or to dwell on why other sites did not write personal stories, comes across as pouting, and certainly does not establish a means of respect. I have nothing further to add other than wishing Jon all the best in his future endeavors.
February 4th, 2010 at 12:16 am
The weird thing is the the p2pnet story on Slyck is linked from mp3newswire and not dierectly from p2pnet. Its almost like people have there own news site and then just link there own stories on other sites maybe in the hopes of directing traffic to there site.
I have no problem with Jon asking people for donations if they can give. And if it happens every month or two Im fine with that as well. Sometimes people need to be reminded that sometimes it is okey to pay for things you like and enjoy. We know the money goes to the site and help him support his family. Look at the money other sites have the potential to rake in and most of the time we dont know what the money goes for for frankly how much is even made.
Imagine if Jon took a job writing for a local BC newspaper in Vancouver or Victoria. Even if the stories were exactly the same as here, many people that read these stories probably would not be able to read them in those newspapers. ( unless they have online versions).
I tend to have limited time on the internet because I do so many things while Im online, I sometimes dont have the time to check out lots of news sites to see whats going on, so p2pnet is always first.
February 4th, 2010 at 12:17 am
I hate to burst your bubble old chap but I,m not a zeropaid “member” or in fact a member anywhere except my own forum that has never been mentioned here, I am simply a p2p network support operator and I have called the sites how I have seen them over the last 5 years, thankfully you dont have any rights to silence my opinion and rest assured I wont be asking you to stay silent I left that sort of attitude on Slycks.
Have a great day.
February 4th, 2010 at 12:58 am
Come now, the only bubbles being burst are those that should never have gotten blown up by attitudes or ego in the first place, and then revealed here, above my posts, and below my posts, in a topic about P2PNet closing. Silencing your opinion is not my intention, you and everyone else are most certainly entitled to have one, however, changing the tone of where this senseless discussion was headed (for obvious reasons) seems that it should be much more preferred by everyone to get back ON topic, which is Jon’s financial situation, and the site closing. I see no correlation in THAT topic, to other sites. Perhaps the fact that you feel so compelled to mention you left Slycks, is a perfect example of how this is NOT the place or time for YOUR personal issues with other sites, nor anyone elses for that matter. If I failed to make you understand how petty this is, compared to the big picture here that Jon is facing, please do take time to realize how foolish this topic has now become that others are reading. As for where other sites get their news, is that related to Jon’s news here about his financial issues? Certainly not. I will have a good day, thank you, and the same to you.
February 4th, 2010 at 5:52 am
I think the folks here can read who is calling all the names & holding their fingers on the uppercase button and who is not.
I fully understand Jons position having been in the same position myself thats why come friday/sat I will be making a donation, if you want to see me think better of you and your opinions then simply do the same, as you posted above, respect is earned.

who cares, already?
no one.
who cares who linked what from whom? as long as the story got out and jon got some moral support.
as jon has repeatedly said, he’s not interested in who broke what story when, where, or to whom. as long as the story gets out.
now please all you lamers…shut up and take your lame, private little war somewhere else.
