New Samsung phone is a mover

p2pnet.net News:- If you’re in Korea, this March, and you see someone energetically shaking his/her cell phone, it may not be because the thing just won’t work, damnit!

They might simply be turning it off. Or deleting a spam message. Or even generating a rhythm to groove to.

Because Samsung’s SCH-S310 is, claims the company, the world’s first shake’n’break cell phone – or, to use its own description, the first three-dimensional Movement Recognition mobile.

The phone has ‘accelerometer’ sensing technology to calculate the direction in which the phone is moving, as well as its speed of movement.

“The capability extends beyond the identification of the general locus to include precise recognition of small and rapid movements as well as alphanumeric symbols,” states Samsung, emphasising that it developed an algorithm to solve the problem of recognizing moving shapes in 3D space, using only sensors.

Development of 3D movement recognition technology was a joint project between Samsung Electronics and the Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology, it says.

The technology will have applications in mp3 players, digital cameras and other handhelds and, “will particularly effect the way games are played on a mobile phone,” says the company.

“Many functions will be controlled by movement instead of buttons.

How does it work?

A user could "write" the number "three" in the air, the mobile would read the movement and then dial "3," says Samsung.

Shaking the phone twice will conclude a call or delete spam messages.

Or, the user could draw a "O" or "X" in the air and the phone would recognize it and respond with a voice message "yes" or "no."

“Move the phone sharply to the right and the selection on the MP3 play function will move to the next tune on the list; move it to the left, and the selection will back up one number,” says Samsung.

The "motion beat box" function enables the user to select a particular sound from the menu such as "drum," "tambourine," "scratch" or "clap." Then he or she shakes the mobile phone and the beat will be re-created in rhythm with the motion.

This enables the user to keep time with any tune being played.

“With the music performance function, the phone will begin to play music after it is shaken by the user,” says the company.

“The sensors in the phone identify the movement and adjust the beat accordingly.”

And just in case you get lost after al the gyrations, the SCH-S310 has a magnetic sensor built in that serves as a compass.

Moreover, it adds, “The intenna slide design comes with GPS, 1.3M-pixel camera, music-on-demand, and mobile banking capabilities.”

  1. Reader's Write Says:

    So what’s next?
A screen that selects what you point to with your hand?
A music player that changes the style of music based on your facial expression?

So many simple things that can be made that much more complex and prone to error!

Think about driving your car by gesturing emphatically!
“It’s not my fault I had an accident, it’s the car that misinterpreted!”

If big companies spent only 1% of their efforts into feeding the starving, sheltering the homeless and cleaning the environment we would live in a so better world.

Stop bitching. It’s too bad those people born out into a poor country/family. Thats just life.
