AOL is looking for $$$ …
On the heels of its announcement that it’s getting rid of 450 employees, AOL says it’s launching a dating service.
www.love.com is being built on the AOL Instant Messenger service and will compete with longstanding online dating services such as Match.com, says a Reuters report here.
"Love.com is initially being offered at no cost, but AOL, the Internet unit of media conglomerate Time Warner Inc., said it will begin charging by Valentine’s Day," the story says. "The service is expected to add immediately to earnings once fees are charged, a company executive said."
However, ""To get people to pay for (Love.com) will be challenging," the report quotes David Card, vp of Jupiter Research, as saying.
AOL already has a long term partnership deal with Match.com.
