Global warming = Great Dying

p2pnet.net OT News:- “The Great Dying,” as the catastrophe that wiped out 90 of ocean and 70% of land 250 million years ago is now being labelled, wasn’t caused by a giant meteor hitting the earth after all. It was probably all down to global warming caused by volcanic activity, say two new studies.

“This is not a world that is happy and then goes ‘Bang!’ ” says University of Washington paleontologist Peter D. Ward, leader of one of the two new studies, and quoted in the Washington Post. “This is a world that’s in trouble for a long time, and then it gets in even worse trouble.”

The two independent reports both cast doubt on the theory that the Great Dying was caused by the impact of an asteroid or comet such as the one that triggered the extinction of the dinosaurs 65 million years ago, says the Post report.

Abrupt and Gradual Extinction Among Late Permian Land Vertebrates in the Karoo Basin, South Africa and Photic Zone Euxinia During the Permian-Triassic Superanoxic Event are both published in Science.
