Oz Labour senator opposes ‘Conroy Filter’
p2pnet view P2P | Politics:- It’s a bloody ridiculous situation, but we, the people, spend an awful lot of time trying to get the governments we voted in to do what we, the people, want.
Over in Australia, Kevin Rudd’s Labour administration has been trying force internet censorship on the population, using the hoary old ‘protect our children from pornography’ as his excuse.
The only people who seem to support him are anti-porn zealots and his own followers, a tiny minority. Oh, and corporate acolytes.
And yet the ‘Stephen Conroy ISP filter’, which depends largely on a blacklist of banned sites, is still being proposed as a serious possibility.
However, those opposing it have just acquired an interesting new ally.
Senator Kate Lundy (right).
“In 1996, aged 28, Lundy became the youngest woman from the Australian Labor Party to be elected to the federal parliament”, says the Wikipedia.
The Conroy filter “doesn’t empower parents with the control over what their children are getting,” The Australian has her saying. His policy “just puts in place a blanket filter.”
Her solutioin? And opt-out.
It would “allow web surfers to set the filter at a level they consider appropriate for their household”, says the story, adding:
“Under her proposal, the Refused Classification-based filter would apply if an internet user had not made their own choice.”

She will toe the party line. Dont forget politicians have to do what the party demands of them, instead of the constituents they represent, unless they are allowed a conscience vote. If she crosses the floor & votes against this filter she will be expelled from the labor party, thus ending her political career.
