Chile earthquake triggers Pacific tsunami

p2pnet view P2P:- An earthquake which struck the Maule Region of Chile today has been upgraded from between 8.3 and 8.5 to a possible 8.8-magnitude.

Vancouver Island,  BC, where p2pnet and many readers are located, is on the list of areas likely to be affected.

Elsewhere, 78 people have so far been reported dead and a “tsunami warning has been extended across 53 countries, including most of Central and South America and as far as Australia, Hawaii and Antarctica” says Times Online.

The pix on the right are from a live stream which started broadcasting from the disaster scene shortly after the quake hit.

“The wave has already caused serious damage to the sparsely populated Juan Fernandez islands, off the Santiago coast, and is now travelling across the ocean at several hundred km per hour”, says the Times.

“Entire buildings in the historical centre of Concepcíon had collapsed, cars flattened and bridges stretching across the Biobio river which dissects the city, brought down”, says the Telegraph, going on, “Dramatic images broadcast on local television channels showed craters and fissures had opened up in the earth swallowing cars and parts of buildings. Rescue teams were frantically trying to reach people reportedly trapped in buildings in Concepcion. Local media reported isolated incidents of looting from pharmacies and commercial centres in the city.”

An “Advisory is in effect” says the West Coast/Alaska tsunami warning center fror Alaska, British Columbia, Washington, Oregon and California.

A list gives estimated times of arrival for locations along the North American Pacific coast “from a tsunami generated at the given source location”, it says, going on >>>

The list is ordered by arrival time starting with the earliest.

Since tsunami speed is directly related to water depth, tsunami ETAs can be computed independent of tsunami amplitude.  THE LISTING OF A TSUNAMI ARRIVAL TIME BELOW DOES NOT INDICATE A WAVE IS IMMINENT. The listed arrival time is the initial wave arrival.  Tsunamis can be dangerous for many hours after arrival, and the initial wave is not necessarily the largest.

The British Columbia coastline is now under a tsunami advisory, along with the entire U-S West Coast including Alaska. The Geological Survey says this will produce dangerous currents or waves this afternoon for boaters, swimmers, Kayakers and possibley coastal structures. Caution is advised.

    Hi Jon
Gary here enjoying the beach In mexico at a little place called Zipolite and we didn’t get much more that a series of large waves this morning. In fact we didn’t even really know if that was actually the Tsunami waves or not. so we stayed off the beach till about 3 pm when it was reported that it was due to hit Canada. At That point we knew it was long gone.

    Enjoy

Good to know the earthquake isn’t causing more devastation. But I think you guys would be safe even if it DID reach us here on the island. To reach you, we’d have to be pretty much swamped.

    Have fun.
