‘War’ tax for the Net?

p2pnet.net News:- What could the Spanish American War possibly have to do with US Net and data connections?

A tax originally created to help pay for the war and then renewed to pay for World War I could this year be extended to include them.

The Joint Committee on Taxation, “deeply involved in writing U.S. tax laws,” unexpectedly, “dropped a political bombshell” to the effect that the three percent telecommunications tax could cover, “all data communications services to end users” - including broadband, dial-up, fiber; cable modems, cellular and DSL links, says CNET News.

At the moment, the tax applies only to traditional telephone services, but because of “technological convergence” and the “dropping popularity of landlines,” the committee, of which senator Orrin Hatch is a member, has concluded it, “might make sense to extend the 100-year old levy to new technologies”.

But the committee didn’t say whether or not it thought congress should approve such an extension, simply listing it as an “option,” says CNET.

We do not need nor want any new taxes. The governemnt and cartels steal enough of our money. If the cartels had to pay the same percentage of their income in taxes as the middle class, the governmant would have all the money it needs. I know that they say they do, but all the tax loopholes allow the to pay much lower rates.

But…. it’s not REALLY a new tax. It goes all the way back to the civil war… right? ;-I
