Sony PSP Europe launch delayed?
p2pnet.net News:- Something that’s never before happened in the UK may delay the arrival of Sony’s PSP (PlayStation Portable).
There’s a shortage of chips, apparently.
The PSP will be on the shelves in the US as of March 24 at $250, but it won’t be on sale in Europe until the second quarter of the year.
“The delay marks the second time Sony has missed a debut date for the PSP,” says Bloomberg News. “The company had planned to have the device ready for all regions by the end of last year.
“Sony can’t make enough specialized chips and hand-held players to meet demand in all three markets of Japan, North America and Europe,” it quotes Sony’s Kenichi Fukunaga as saying.
The hand-held game console which is also able to play mp3s was supposed to have gone on sale worldwide in late 2004, “but eventually only managed a limited shipment in Japan in mid-December, with just over 500,000 units shipped there by the end of the year,” says Bloomberg..
The Nintendo DS, however, is is slated to go on sale in Europe on March 11 and has been available in North America since December 2, 2004.
Reuters, however, says a spokesman for Sony, “declined to confirm that the launch would be delayed, saying only that it continues to expect to roll the machine out ‘in the spring’.
“The company source said Sony still planned to ship 3 million PSPs by March 31, but it was not sure how the distribution of those units would change if the launch in Europe was delayed.”
