War driving in Seattle

p2pnet.net News:- Seattle’s war drivers will be interested to learn WiFiMaps.com and the University of Washington’s communications department have teamed up to make maps of Wi-Fi installations throughout the downtown area.

They’ll include SSID name, and color-coding based upon encryption status, or pay-site classification and are downloadable via BitTorrent.

“Dr Philip Howard from the communications department has been teaching his students about technology, ideas, people, and how culture is affected by these new concepts,” says WiFiMaps.

“Their project allows them to gain some practical experience while exploring Wi-Fi as it pertains to them and the people around them. Involving 100 students, this project is one of the largest collective efforts to map Seattle’s wireless landscape.”

The maps were generated at 300dpi, to work with three different sizes of paper, letter, tabloid, and architectural E. Letter and tabloid prints have one half inch margins on all sides, while the architectural E paper has one inch margins on each side, says the company, going on:

“The images are in a 24-bit PNG format, with alpha channel. BE WARNED! The arch-e image sizes are alarmingly large.”

Locations include:

Raster (aerial): http://www.wifimaps.com/downloads/WiFiMaps-UW-Prod-Raster.zip.torrent
