Oz Pirate Party helps seniors bypass net ‘filter’

p2pnet view P2P | Politics:- Exit International says its an “end-of-life choices (voluntary euthanasia/ assisted suicide) information and advocacy organisation” founded by Australian physician Dr Philip Nitschke in 1997 “after the over-turning of the world’s first Voluntary Euthanasia law – the Rights of the Terminally Ill (ROTI) Act”.

Enter Australian prime minister Kevin Rudd, senator Stephen Conroy and the  online censorship blacklist through which their Oz Labour Party plans to tell people what they can see online, and what they can’t.

And one of the things they can’t do is check out Exit International data, Rudd & Co have decreed.

However, Exit wanted to make sure its members had access to its pro-euthanasia material, so it turned to the Pirate Party of Australia, says Computerworld.

“The Pirate Party hates the Internet filter and readily put Exit International in contact with member David Campbell, from Newcastle IT shop ClearComputers”, says the story, adding:

“The brief? To teach 70-year olds to bypass the Internet filter. Campbell accepted the challenge, and proved breaking the filter is not just child’s play. Your grandma can do it too.”

Says Exit >>>

At 10.30am on Thursday 1 April, Exit International held the first in a series of Hacking Masterclasses for Australian Seniors wanting to learn how to circumvent the Rudd Government’s proposed new mandatory internet filtering plan.

The Masterclass was led by one of Australia’s leading young IT gurus, David Campbell.  The Masterclass was prompted by the reported inclusion of Exit International websites ( www.peacefulpill.com ) on the Government’s secret Blacklist of banned websites.  The Clean Feed policy will see older Australians denied access to end of life information.

The Enex Content Filtering Report commissioned by the Federal government (October 2009) stated that a technically competent user could, if they wished, circumvent the filtering technology.

To ensure that Senior Australians can continue to access a range of online information after the Federal Government’s Censorship takes effect, the Masterclass provides plain language factual information designed to maintain clear lines of communication.

The initial “Hacking Masterclass” was at the Dougherty Community Centre, 7 Victor St, Chatswood on Thursday 1 April 2010.  Mini Masterclasses will now be incorporated into Exit’s current national workshop series starting in Perth on Wednesday 7 April.

Wow, this is some of the terrible stuff they wish to hide on the internet.
I’m guessing like other places the seniors are the ones who vote on mass down there.
So hopefully the seniors stick around long enough to help kick the politicians to the curb.

This is stupid. The government will just block access to VPNs and proxies as they discover them. This is what they do in China. Don’t know why you are all complaining though, it’s not as if Australia has too many civil liberties anyway. Joint anyone?

  3. Reader's Write Says:

heh, The thing with proxy’s and VPN’s they have other uses rather then just bypassing the internet.

I use an encrypted VPN as I use alot of Wifi HotSpots, therefore my traffic is encrypted and can’t be sniffed.

places like http://www.vpnsecure.me provide an honest service, i’ve just switched over to them as they too are against the internet filter. May aswell support them in the process of trying to help everyone out if this does get passed through parliament.

Who know’s what will happen? will the government block VPN’s? I guess if they do, they will go underground and will probably be known by IP only so they will be alot harder to track down to block.

There are so many ways, at the end of the day, they can’t block access to all services that will bypass it. The only thing they can do is make it illegal and that might stop a few people, depending on punishment.

Making it illegal is stupid tho, since there are very legitimate reasons to use a VPN.
