AOL man sold 92m email addies

p2pnet.net News:- Former AOL software engineer Jason Smathers, 24, said to have stolen 92 million screen names and then sold them for $28,000, has pleaded guilty to conspiracy and interstate transport of stolen property.

He’s been up before but last time around, US District Judge Alvin Hellerstein in New York wasn’t sure whether or not a crime had been committed.

Smathers now faces up 15 years inside and up to $500,000 in fines at a May 20 hearing, “although federal guidelines call for significantly less,” says CNN.

“The government accused Smathers of using the ID code of another AOL employee to access a database in May 2003 and sell stolen information about all 30 million AOL subscribers to a co-conspirator, says CNN. “The other man, Sean Dunaway, 21, of Las Vegas, Nevada, was accused of using the names to send spam promoting his Internet gambling business. He is also accused of reselling the list of names. Charges are pending against Dunaway. A court date is expected to be set next month.”

Smathers sold the names to Dunaway who used them to promote his offshore gambling site before selling them on to other spammers, says The Register, adding:

“The Judge is unlikely to be sympathetic, he cancelled his own AOL subscription back in December because of the amount of spam in his inbox.”

This guy is a putz on so many levels. I hope he gets a BIG dent in his head when the judge throws the book at him. Here’s wishing him and his future prison hubbys all the best.

Only one way to STOP this sort of thing “Cut Off His Balls”
