eXLite or eXeem Lite?

p2pnet.net News:- Over the weekend I ran a follow-up story saying Dan’s eXLite, a hand-made application attempting to do for the Cydoor-laden eXeem what Kazaa Lite did for Kazaa, was doing well.

Unknown to me, a couple of guys in Germany and Poland had also launched another app named eXeem Lite and I believed they were one and the same – that’s to say eXLite.

They weren’t.

eXeem Lite – the Polish/German app – patently had problems. It still carried the Cydoor adware/spyware program, although it had been blocked, and it also blocked the original – that’s to say the first and only – eXLite sites through the Windows Hosts file. I understand both those faults have now been rectified.

My first story generated around 30 Readers’ Writes, mostly from irate eXLite fans.

But included was a post on Zeropaid which said: “Warning: – The ‘eXlite’ builds of eXeem Lite are created by a online scammer. He is the creator of TorrentP2P, a rip off of the spyware free filesharing program KCeasy (http://kceasy.com/). Do not trust this person, let alone download any software he releases. HE DOES NOT DESERVE YOUR DOWNLOADS!” – http://www.zeropaid.com/php/comments/comments4.php?pID=12331.”

That didn’t help.

My second post, which was intended to clear up the confusion, apparently only made things worse and had generated 65 comments before I took it down because ‘comment’ posts and flames had gotten completely out of hand.

I also received a number of emails attacking me personally. Some of them were extremely unpleasant. The posters didn’t have the balls to include their correct return emails, of course..

Anyway …

I’d already written one article about eXLite when this can of worms was opened. In it, both eXeem Lite and eXlite are used to refer to Dan’s Cydoor-free version eXeem.

My second piece was meant to be a Way to Go ! aimed at Dan’s program and was never intended to support what has now come to be known as eXeem Lite – the Polish/German version.

Any post anywhere which says, or implies, the opposite, is incorrect.

So when I say once again, Way to Go ! I’m talking about eXLite al la Dan, and no other.

I hope this sets the record straight.

[NOTE: All p2pnet comment posts are entirely un-moderated. However, following the slagging and flaming which went on in the last two stories, I reserve the right to keep delete comments posted here.]

Cheers!
Jon

Well eXeem has removed Cydoor now due to all the pressure form the P2P comunity and now are going to use HTTP ads. So the fight between the lite versions may be over .I just hope someone starts to deveop somthing eXeem like and create a open source version of the network.

    I’ll drink to that : )

Thank you Jon for clearing this up.

For those who might still be confused since the article does have links to which is which. Follow Jon’s link in this article provided in this paragraph: “I’d already written one article about eXLite when this can of worms was opened. In it, both eXeem Lite and eXlite are used to refer to Dan’s Cydoor-free version eXeem.” click on “one article” and it will take you to another with http://www.exlite.net mentioned at the bottom as the original adware/spyware free version (Dan’s). Those who have been following this would know the German/Polish one Jon is talking about resides in exlite.pl and exeemlite.com .

Jon an update for this article to just insert the URL’s when you refer to one of the two would be the icing on the cake. This way we can forward users to this article without them coming back and asking “ok, but which one is which, we still dont know”. Thank you again for taking the time out to post this update, it is much appreciated.

I could not find reference to reports that eXeem will be using HTTP ads instead of Cydoor. But if that is true then we certainly will freeze the eXlite project and urge people to download the new eXeem. We have already started on developing something “exeem like” although I would not want to place that label on it. Dan has already released a beta test of a nifty little P2P application that runs under the gnuttela protocol. For those who would like to join the beta test you can apply on our forums http://www.exlite.net . And I am working on another P2P application that will cater directly to the .torrent crowd, which should also lower the number of fakes to the sane level it was in prior to the release of eXeem.

Bear in mind our server has had a primary drive failure and under went a tape backup. But somehow our host installed a very old version of PHP and messed up the MySQL installation. This was the first time the host actually fails, or even fails to rectify a problem promptly. For the most part of 5 years their service was top notch. We hope to be back soon.

So…. whereto a/the link for downloading? Having to browse thru all previously just makes me think “To ~!@#$%^&* with it” :-(

  6. Reader's Write Says:

There seems to be a problem (at my end anyway) with http://www.exlite.net, which is why I didn’t include a link. I’ve emailed you separately on this.

    Cheers!
