iPod vs PSP?
p2pnet.net News View: - You knew it was coming, and now it’s here – the first of what will inevitably be a series of hand-helds that may well see Apple relegated to the back bench again, albeit it somewhat wealthier than the last time around.
Unless, of course, Apple has deep and dark plans for iPod that none of its employees have leaked out, yet.
Sony Pictures Home Entertainment says it’s pegged April 19 as the date for the release of XXX, Hellboy, Resident Evil 2 and Once Upon A Time in Mexico for the North American market.
All four will play on Sony’s Universal Media Disc (UMD) video format featured on its PSP (PlayStation Portable).
It says it’ll also be releasing UMD videos for PSP in Japan starting in April, with Europe to follow.
The UMD is a high capacity optical format able to store up to 1.8 GB of digital data or one movie on a 60mm disc and movies are produced in 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio and encoded using advanced AVC compression, says the company.
Sony’s answer to the iPod allows users to enjoy not only music tracks, but also 3D games and full-motion video. With graphics rendering comparable to that of PlayStation2, says Sony, PSP features a 4.3″ screen and a high-res TFT display.
Accessories and connectivity options include Memory Stick Duo, USB 2.0, IR port and Wi-Fi wireless LAN.

That concept has already been tried out .
The same idea.. use completely foreign disks which cannot be burned on or read by a computer to market little videos for a portable player.. it’s called video now and it’s marketed to little kids who buy it hook line and sinker..
sony may attract gamers who want a few movies for their psp.. but for those who want a portable media player.. they can buy for the same price as a psp a much larger screened portable dvd player… and guess what.. IT PLAYS DISKS YOU CAN BURN YOURSELF!
As for playing multimedia files.. archos makes one of those much cheaper and smaller than psp.. but they havent caught on because they dont use the much better XVID to play mpeg 4 files… thereby making divx look choppy and ungainly.

I don’t think the PSP was ever meant to compete with the iPod.
