Ed Webber, the MPAA …

p2pnet.net News:- Edward Webber is/was the LokiTorrent admin who, as Lowkey, said he’d fight the Big Seven movie studios’ MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America), persuading people to donate something between $40,000 and $60,000 towards the cause.

However, when the MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America) got heavy, Webber backed down, agreeing to, “pay a substantial settlement“.

He also promised to give the MPAA access to, and copies of, all logs and server data related to LokiTorrent activities, “which will provide a roadmap to others who have used LokiTorrent to engage in illegal activities,” says the studios’ enforcer.

What happened to the cash Webber raised? Is it going towards his MPAA pay off? No one knows, at this point. A gag order has also been imposed on him to stop him revealing details about the ‘deal’.

In the meanwhile, what about the data Webber turned over? Will they spell trouble for LokiTorrent users?

No, according to Slyck’s Michael Ingram – with the possible exception of “serial” uploaders.

Quoting ‘Paul,’ someone who, Ingram says, ran a Torrent site based on the same scripts and source used by LokiTorrent and who “conferred regularly” with Webber, “Those access logs have no value it all. They only display whether you downloaded the .torrent file, not if you actually downloaded the content using that Torrent.

“The Torrent file is merely a key; the MPAA can not prove that it was used in any locks.

“At best, the information could be used in conjunction with other research to target ’serial uploaders’. Much like the RIAA target those who share more than a set number of music tracks, the MPAA can now target those who have a history of trading Torrent files, although such a system would rely on static IP addresses.

“But Paul does not believe that there will be enough information even for this.

“ ‘Logs files tend to grow at a rate of 1GB per day on this kind of site. Most site owners … either disable logging or purge the logs every few days. So there’s little to no information for them,’ he explained. ‘Perhaps Loki [Webber’s alias] even disabled his logging completely recently because of the large influx of new users’.”

The American Way
Is Webber a rat or a victim? Or did he see himself as a 21st century David with an army of supporters behind him?

As we said in a comment post to another story on the subject, it takes a lot to stand up to one of the entertainment industry enforcers. How many of the 8,500 ‘approached’ by the RIAA have done so?

Lowkey was out for all he could get, but isn’t that the American Way?

And in the meanwhile, there aren’t too many people with the balls (not to speak of the resources) to go up against a multi-billion-dollar opponent.

Webber said the money would be used to do exactly that, but he didn’t say how. Nor did he say how much he’d need. But the dollars poured in.

Did Webber honestly believe donations alone would allow him to take on the studios with their limitless financial, media and political resources and legions of lawyers?

“Recent estimates by attorneys are looking at two or three times this amount in a full-on battle“, as Ratiatum’s Guillaume Champeau pointed out, going on that this wasn’t an all-in figure: Webber would have needed around $90,000 a month.

“Before asking for three times $30.000 per month, it seems to me Lokitorrent should explain clearly why it has good reason to believe it can win the case,” said Champeau.

However, no one asked.

Webber’s image on the right is a lift from an unknown artist who’s running a spoof Wanted poster, plus related story links, as a p2pnet reader pointed out. The site also has a forum.

Stay tuned.

Who knows how much money he’s pocketed from the donations.

  2. Reader's Write Says:

He suckered the MPAA & “the people.”

    That’s hard to do.

  3. Reader's Write Says:

I think you meant he suckered the people and gave the MPAA oral pleasure.

  4. Reader's Write Says:

This was a case of fraud, plain and simple. People donated with the expectation that Ed Webber would fight the MPAA in court to the bitter end.

Instead, at the same time as he was taking people’s money, he was in secret negotiations with the enemy to work out a deal that would save his own neck by betraying the very people who remained loyal to him and his website Lokitorrent.

Now that we know the case never even went to trial, donors have a right to demand their money back – money that insead of being used to fight the MPAA, ended up paying them off.

The hate campaign has started, and we have to wonder where it might end. There are always the fanatics who will take the law into their own hands if they feel that justice was not served. A lawsuit by donors against him might even be in his own best interest.

If I ever had the nerve to do what Ed Webber did, the first thing I would use that money for is to buy myself a bulletproof vest.

    You know you really funny.

The clown that was operating lokitorrent was a theif in that he was involved in the theft of copyrighted material that belonged to the mpaa and then he ran off with all of those legal donations that supposedly was to be used for his legal defense .

FACE IT HE BUTT FUCKED ALL OF YOU.

I HOPE THE MPAA HAS A FIELD DAY WITH ALL OF YOU CYBERTHIEVES.

THE MPAA SHOULD USE ALL OF THAT SERVER INFORMATION THEY CONSFISCATED AND SUE THE LIVING SHIT OF ALL OF YOU SCOUNDRELS THAT THINK THAT YOU ARE SO SMUG JUST BECAUSE YOU LIVE OUT OF THE UNITED STATES YOU CAN STEAL FROM PEOPLE.

I HOPE THEY FUCK ALL YOU OFFENSIVE FREELOADERS AND DOWNLOADERS IN THE ASS.

LET’S SEE A $4000 SETTLEMENT IN US DOLLARS IS A LOT MONEY THAT COULD HAVE BEEN BETTER SPENT.

YOU GUYS REALLY HAVE THE GAUL TO COMPLAIN ABOUT HOW THE SCOUNDREL AT LOKITORRENT PORKED YOU SILLY PEOPLE IN THE POOPER.

    HA!! HA!!

  6. Reader's Write Says:

wow, you’re an idiot, first off lets just discuss your theory of us as “thieves”. When your friend bought a tape back in the 80’s and made a mix tape for you did you consider that a crime? When your mom recorded soap operas or other daytime tv shows was that theft? its the same principle with online trading, someone somewhere bought the material….so the corporations got theirs (you’re fooling yourself if you think these actions are stealing from the artist, the corporations lose barely anything) people are offering these products…for free, so there is no crime there because no profit is made. You need to think about what you say before you spew garbage of which you know nothing. just because you have some twisted moral belief that people sharing is thievery that is your problem, not ours.

WHAT DO YOU MEAN ABOUT WE SUCKER ?

I DON’T KNOW WHAT COUNTRY YOU ARE FROM BUT NORWAY IS CONSIDERING DMCA LAWS IN THEIR COUNTRY.

DMCA LAWS ARE COMING YOUR WAY IN EUROPE.

YOU MUST OF HEARD ABOUT THE WIPO.

IT’S ONLY A MATTER OF TIME.

I DON’T CARE WHAT YOU THINK OF ME BUT LET ME CLUE YOU IN ON SOMETHING DOWNLOADING MOVIES WITHOUT PAYING FOR IT IS THE BASIS FOR ANY SOUND COPY RIGHT LAW ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD.

IN OTHER WORDS IN AMERICA GREAT BRITAIN AND MOST OF THE EU DOWNLOADING MOVIES WITHOUT PAYING A ROYALTY ON IT IS ILLEGAL.

ASK ANY LAWYER ON THE SUBJECT.

THERE IS A CASE THAT IS PENDING IN THE UNITED STATES SUPREME COURT CONCERNING P2P NETWORKS THAT CAN BE SUED FOR CONTRIBUTORY COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT.

LOKITORRENT IS IS THE VIOLATION OF THE LAW AS IT STANDS TODAY AT LEAST IN THE UNITED STATES.

THAT’S NOT THE SAME THING AS RECORDING A TELEVISION SHOW OR BACKING LEGALLY BOUGHT AND OWNED CDS AND DVDS.

    YOU MUST BE FROM EUROPE.

YOU ARE QUITE IGNORANT ABOUT COPYRIGHT LAW THIEF.

YOU DON’T HAVE A CLUE WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT AND YOU SOUND LIKE THE TYPE WHO WOULD GET CAUGHT DOING ILLEGAL DOWNLOADING AND PAYING THE MPAA A $ 4000 SETTLEMENT.

    ONE MORE THING……………….

    LEARN HOW TO SPELL.
