p2pnet-to-go: beta
p2pnet.net News:- A while back we told you Tom Higginson over in Birmingham, England working on an open source script to make p2pnet mobile : )
“I’ve been using my phone to access p2pnet.net for about three months using a service provided by Google that converts webpages into WML,” he said. But, “Obviously this doesn’t produce the best output for browsing using something with a screen the size of a passport photo
”
Higgy has just finished his first draft, so to speak, and, “I’ll probably have to do some cleaning up,” he says. “It’s slightly messy in places.
“And I’ll try and get comments viewable soon.”
Higgy’s 17 and on his second year of a BTEC National in E-Business at Shrewsbury College of Arts and Technology.
“I’ve had an interest in P2P since near the end of Napster, and once that went I got involved in Gnutella,” he told us. “I found the Gnutella v0.4 protocol interesting and chose to stick with Gnutella since then.
“Shareaza has been my main weapon of choice since around 1.6 was released and I’ve been involved with the Shareaza community since then, and done various odd bits of development for them.
“I’ve been interested in web design since about 2000, and for a couple of years ran a, not very successful, I’ll admit, website for the game ‘RollerCoaster Tycoon.’ Since then I’ve got into development using PHP and MySQL. From using my phone to access the ‘internet’ I’ve gained an interest in development for these devices.
“I was inspired to create this script after attempting to visit the site using a service provided by Google that converts normal HTML pages into WML for use on mobile devices. This isn’t really ideal, as the resulting pages contain elements of the original page that make browsing on a mobile device difficult. So I had the idea of making a way of accessing the site that is designed specifically for such devices. And so this project was born
.
“I have another project I’m working on at the moment. More on that soon …”
heh. Wonder what that’ll be : )
For now, Higgy’s p2pnet-to-go script should work on any device such as a mobile phone, that has a WML browser – in fact, any WAP compatable device should do, he says.
“Simply add the address to your bookmarks and start browsing.
“If you want to say it uses WML 1.1, you can
”
We hope to have a pointer online soon.
