Dangerous Xbox cords recalled

p2pnet.net News:- Seven Microsoft Xbox users suffered burned hands, 30 reported fire damage and 23 others said they’d had smoke damage or damage to their carpets or entertainment centers caused by hazardous power cords the company had known about “for several months”.

Microsoft has now recalled more than 14 million, or around 70%, of the cords.

Peter Moore, a home and entertainment division corporate vp, is quoted by the Seattle Post-Intelligencer as saying Microsoft, “had spent the last several months gearing up for the recall announcement, by producing more power cords and making other arrangements”.

If it was made before October 23, 2003, your console needs a replacement cord, the exception being Europe. There, consoles manufactured before January 13, 2004, require a new cord.

Under the heading Why are Xbox replacement power cords needed? Microsoft states, “The replacement power cords are designed to protect consumers and their Xbox consoles from rare electrical component failures that can pose a fire hazard.”

It also says in almost all instances, damage was contained within the console itself or limited to the tip of the power cord at the back of the console.

Users should turn off their Xboxes when no one is around until the new cords arrive, says the company which is limiting replacements to three per household.

Moore declined to say how much the recall will cost the company, adds the Post-Intelligencer, “But Charlotte Stuyvenberg, director of Xbox public relations, said the cost of replacing the cords won’t have a material financial affect on the Home and Entertainment Division.”
