New York Times gets About.com

p2pnet.net News:- The New York Times Company says it’s buying mega pop-up, frames site About Inc and its Web site, About.com, from Primedia Inc —

— for $410 million.

“Times Company officials said the acquisition would add a fast-growing, highly profitable Web site to the company’s portfolio and would increase the company’s revenue from the expanding online advertising business,” says the NYT.

By adding About’s 22 million monthly users to the Times Company’s 13 million monthly users – from The New York Times, The Boston Globe and more than 40 other Web sites – the company said it would have the 12th-largest presence on the Net.

“This scale is important as content companies compete for market share in readership and advertising,” says Martin A. Nisenholtz, the Times company’s new senior vp for digital operations.

The acquisition comes after the Times was, “among the losers in a bidding war in the fall for CBS MarketWatch, the financial news Web site,” says the NYT report.

“The site was acquired by Dow Jones & Company, publisher of The Wall Street Journal, for $519 million.”

Cost-per-click ads are the fastest-growing segment of online advertising,, the story states, quoting Peter Appert, a media analyst for Goldman Sachs, as saying, “The appeal of About is that it gets the NYT Company into the fastest-growing component of the advertising market place, and therefore it makes strategic sense.”

A p2pnet spokesman says he’s ready to listen to offers in the $4.10 range.

If we take a portion of the $410 million price based on the relative reach, that means that p2pnet is worth:

    35
    —– * 410,000,000 = $1.6 million
    8,650

    Not bad! :-)

To me, it looks like one of those pages you reach when you mispell a URL.

Have you ever been searching and accidentally landed on an about.com page and couldn’t get out of it again? Pop pop pop pop pop

Nope, I use Konqueror or Firefox as my browser. I also use Linux as my operating system. Firefox and Konqueror are program with features that benefits the users, not the cartels. Those who use Windows and Internet Explorer will find a new enjoyment in using the Internet if they made the switch.
