p2pnet and Ratiatum to merge
p2pnet.net News:- French p2p site Ratiatum.com is to merge with, and run under, the p2pnet banner.
Ratiatum editor and founder Guillaume Champeau has been contributing to p2pnet for some time, and p2pnet’s Jon Newton has similarly been writing for Ratiatum.
“Ratiatum officially started in April, 2002, but it was the continuation of another p2p website which started about a year earlier,” says Champeau. “I had to find a new name for it and came up with Ratiatum, the Latin name for my hometown Rezé, close to Nantes.
“At that time, there was absolutely no French website that actually looked at the social/technical/political p2p issues, and I was absolutely fascinated by the techology and its implications. So I started to write stories about it and it quickly became a passion.”
Champeau, 23, read law in France for three years and studied for a fourth year at the University of Ottawa in Canada, specialising in North American IT and copyright law. One of his tutors was Canadian e-commerce expert professor Michael Geist.
Champeau has also been an IT journalist for the French media for about five years, and published two print issues of Ratiatum Magazine in November and December last year.
The Ratiatum p2pnet merger means in addition, there’ll soon be a new French-language p2pnet, edited by Champeau, who’ll also be responsible for the technical end of the new site.
p2pnet will, in turn, incorporate Ratiatum’s download network, a p2p-served directory of software distributed via p2p nets, mostly eDonkey, but also Gnutella, G2 and FastTrack. Unique to Ratiatum, it went up in 2003 and clearly demonstrates the value of p2p as a distribution tool.
It currently has more than 380 freeware and shareware applications listed and there have been more than two million downloads for virtually no bandwith.
“Ratiatum also has a forum with close to 20,000 registered users, so we’ll probably amalgamate p2pnet’s Readers’ Writes comments section with that,” says Newton.
The new partners say they”ll also eventually open dedicated Spanish, Italian and German p2pnet sites and will soon be looking for collaborators.
p2pnet is shortly moving to the Drupal content management system and the merger will take place once that’s been accomplished. The Drupal transtion is being organized and managed by Bryght Hosting in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
“We’re in no rush,” says Newton. “We intend to get this right so we’ll be making sure we have everything firmly in place and working properly before we launch officially.”
Based on Vancouver Island off mainland BC, Canada, p2pnet went online in August 2002 and now has an impressive following of intelligent, motivated international readers deeply interested in news and events centering on p2p and digital media.
Ratiatum and p2pnet are also a sources for the French and English language Google sites, and for other news and information oriented web pages.

Why is that funny? I think it’s great that more languages are supported on the net (even if I don’t know french).
Oh, and BTW Jon, I think P2PNet could use a new logo, now that you’re at it (making modifications that is). This one looks a little too unprofessional. I can recommend the use of effectica.com or rebelefx.co.uk. Those sites have excellent graphics artists, and will make anything for ya free of charge.

Hey Blade:
There’s not only a new logo, but also a completely new design from Thuan Huynh who, coincidentally, is also in France – Paris, to be exact.
Waddya mean “a little too unprofessional”?
heh
Cheers!

Hey Jon (and kad
). Please please don’t disappoint the ratiatum’s community who expects the result of this merging to be at least as good as the original websites. French members of ratiatum were very commited to their community so i hope the spirit of ratiatum won’t be “dumbed down”.
To american readers: http://www.ratiatum.com is as great a site as slyck and zeropaid, only lacking the same audience (because it’s french). just go and check ! p2pnet will be ten times better after the merging.
May the force be with you….kshhhhh….
cheers.

Well you can take a look @ effectica’s portfolio here (although I recommend a small browser window size when watching.). I think that those logos look a little cooler than yours. It looks like a little kid wrote it. No offence, it’s original, and the text underneath it (People to people, The original dai…, Updates all…) is cool.

Oops..I forgot. That was just the portfolio of that one member. Here’s another one (the guy that made this flash portfolio thing, and has most portfolio)

Now you can take a look at effectica’s entire site. They designed it all. You could ask them for a new design too if you want to.

Great site. Keep up the great work. BTW, the logo’s fine!
Fancy logos are for the short attention spanned ADD/ADHD crowd that’s developed. I read the site for CONTENT, not friggin’ logos. If I want cool FX, I play XBox or PS2 games.
The site’s fine…I’d rather have awesome content/articles & lame graphics, than flashy graphics to hide moronic pseudo-news. Vive le J. Newton!

I happen to like those little doodles. They are the trademarks of P2Pnet
February 22nd, 2005 at 12:48 am
just wondered if you speak French, though the name Jon Newton (maybe this is just a pen name like Ann landers) does not seem the least bit French.
February 22nd, 2005 at 3:05 am
Nope. I’m a Londoner (the REAL London in the UK, that is ; )
And no, I don’t speak French. I used to speak Arabic but it’s been a while and I’ve forgotten it. My wife, Liz, however, speaks French, Spanish, and English like she was born in those respective countries, and she’ll be roped in on the new p2pnet. She was was born in Buda Pest, Hungary. My daughter Emma, however, was born in Tarana (Toronto for the uniniated : )
Guillaume is on his way back to France, tomorrow. He’s in Ottawa as I write this.
Cheers!

I live in Quebec I am very excited about this news having p2pnet in french.Keep on the good work p2pnet.
February 22nd, 2005 at 3:54 pm
I think p2pnet is a little low tech but effectica.com and rebelefx.co.uk are too techy. Somewhere in between would be good.

EW – much prefer the old one….
and “People to People” instead of “Peer 2 Peer”
Little bit corny!
February 23rd, 2005 at 9:45 pm
prefer the old one as well, it had ‘identity’ for the site…this new one breaks some typographic rules and its balance is a bit off, but it’s alright…

Quitter un site tout beau pour une merde comme ça, ça craint.
On pourrait pas plutôt rapatrier ce “truc” sur Rat’?
February 24th, 2005 at 8:44 am
MDR ! Alors voici le grand p2pnet ! Pour toi John : Oh ! What’s a great idea ! Sérieux ça craint ! En plus il est moche cet amas de textes et de pubs ! Yeah one again a bistoufly ! Your p2pnet is really beautiful ! Vous êtes persuadé du bon sens de cette fusion ? Non parce que Ratatium avait plus de gueule quand même. Where do you come from ? Because, did you ever see Ratatium ?
Bon bah c’est tout je crois.
So that’s all
Désolé pour mon anglais pas très bon !
Sorry for my pityfull english !
@ plus…
Seee you later ! Nice to read you !

Non merci
February 24th, 2005 at 9:19 pm

I agree that the default Skin for rebelefx.co.uk is a bit techy but as the admin who likes th create a community people enjoy i put it to a vote and thats the one they picked. Myself i like the charcoal theme that we have its dark but not techy. Maybe something like that would suit you.

The merger put problems because some internautes of ratiatum are against this merger, they prefer ratiatum and they don’t want to lose it. me, I hope that this merger will happen well and we will keep the design of ratiatum.
