CCA newest anti-p2p recruit

p2pnet.net News:- The Christian Coalition of America has fallen hook, line and sinker for spurious Big Music cartel claims that p2p file sharing applications have a major role in the existence of online pornography.

The cartel owners, only one of which is US-based, are into their third attempt to have unanimous court decisions ruling that p2p companies aren’t responsible for what users do with their p2p technologies, overturned.

The Supreme Court will hear arguments on March 29, with briefs from Grokster and Morpheus, the principal defendants (with Kazaa lurking in the shadows) and their supporters, tomorrow.

With the likes of senators Orrin Hatch and Pat Leahy leading the way, the four major labels have been using the specter of online pornography, particularly kiddie porn, to inveigle groups with zero interest in the music industry into backing them as they try to crush p2p file sharing which is, they claim, devastating their multi-billion-dollar businesses.

“File-swapping services make pornography easily accessible to minors, the social conservatives submit,” says the Associated Press.

It’s unlikely the “social conservatives” would have come up with this idea had not the cartel – Sony BMG (Japan and Germany), EMI (Britain), UMG (France) and Warner (US) – mooted it in the first place, blaming p2p and file sharing for declining sales and lost revenue.

“Hollywood is definitely a strange bedfellow to most of us,” Jim Backlin, vp of legislative affairs for the Christian Coalition of America is quoted as saying in the AP story.

“Our goal was to cut down child pornography and other kinds of pornography, and if for some reason we were allied with the Hollywood types this time, so be it.”

But, “If Hollywood gets its way, they’ll be granted de facto control over, frankly, the vast majority of communications and technology today,” Will Rodger, director of public policy for the Computer and Communications Industry Association, which represents Sun Microsystems Verizon Communications and 28 other companies, says.

The Consumer Electronics Association representing more than1,700 technology companies including Intel and TiVo, is also planning a brief in support of Grokster and StreamCast.

Ironically, Sony Corp is also a CEA member.

“This is the Hail Mary pass on the part of the content industry to try to put the entire technology sector under their thumb,” EFF lawyer Fred von Lohmann states in the AP piece.

The EFF (Electronic Frontier Foundation ) is representing Morpehus owner StreamCast.

“That’s something they could never get Congress to do, but that’s precisely what they would like the Supreme Court to do for them.”

And, “We think there’s a distinction between analyzing the legality of a technology and analyzing the legality of a company or a company’s behavior,” Jonathan Potter, executive director of the Digital Media Association, which counts Apple Computer and Microsoft among its members, is quoted as saying. “We don’t think companies who create technology should be liable for other uses of the technology.”

RIAA boss Mitch Bainwol says he, “sought to find a way to ensure that the ‘mainstream of America would embrace our position’,” adds AP.

“File-swapping services make pornography easily accessible to minors, the social conservatives submit,”

You could pretty much inter change the words file-swaping with web browsing , ftp or any of the protocals on the internet.

Hell, I remember a time a co worker (he was new to the internet) did a search for ” vibrating conveyor belts” if I recall correctly the first legit conveyor site showed up on the 5th page of the results.

I think if your kids are on the internet, it should be on a computer where you can watch what is going on… There are too many predators out there.

“RIAA boss Mitch Bainwol says he, “sought to find a way to ensure that the ‘mainstream of America would embrace our position’,” adds AP.”

“Hey american public.. i’m heading a coalition to undermine your consumer rights and destroy all kinds of cool gadget’s you’ve been waiting for for over 6 years.. come.. help me rob you of your future!”

  3. Reader's Write Says:

Bush has been going at this concept for a bit now:
“sought to find a way to ensure that the ‘mainstream of America would embrace our position’,”

But seriously, RIAA is really taking this seriously and appealing at all levels that they can.

Must be nice to create new laws that conform to your profits, and appeal any laws that you dont like, and manipulate schools, government officials and put laws and regulations on other industries (electronics/computers) that conform to your own prefered business profits.

Any business will pursue a profit, but the RIAA is making halliburton looked like a in the closet step child of corruption. RIAA does it in the open and manipulates key public groups.

  4. Reader's Write Says:

Instead of joining the MPAA’s assault on P2P, the Christian Coalition of America should concentrate their energy on the porn production industry itself, the bulk of which operates as legalized prostitution right under their very noses – the studios being primarily located in southern California’s San Fernando Valley. P2P can never be shut down, but all those Californian AIDS-transmitting whorehouses-with-cameras certainly can be – and very easily.

Hollywood is and has always been anti-Christian. Movies glorify the most heinous crimes and promote every vice known to man. Hollywood claims to be only providing consumers a product they demand, but the reality is that this extreme preference for debauchery over morality is no accident.

Mel Gibson’s “The Passion of the Christ” was shunned by Hollywood every step of the way. Not only did every single one of the major studios refuse to provide even the slightest assistance to finance, produce, promote, or distribute this film, but they even actively sought to kill it at every step of the way – working behind the scenes to pressure other companies to join the boycott and even spreading rumors about its claimed “antiSemitism” (without even seeing the film). The fact that the film became one of the top 3 movies of the year despite the industry boycott and slander campaign was almost a miracle in itself.

Hollywood has fought back by attempting to paint all critics of the movie industry as anti-Semites. At the same time, the real anti-Semites are again using the fact that Hollywood is predominantly owned and run by people of Jewish ancestry as a theme in their own political propaganda.

As expected, The Passion will be snubbed at the upcoming Academy Awards – many members of the Academy nomination committees refusing to even watch the film. This would normally be unheard of with a top-grossing film – however, no Christian film has ever before achieved such success.

The Christian Coalition has been tricked into making a Faustian pact with one of the most aggressively anti-Christian organizations in the world.

The MPAA has always claimed that widespread P2P usage will drive Hollywood out of business; then by that logic, what would be better than for the Christian conservatives to support P2P instead of trying to kill it?

I find it interesting that people who routinely beat a book in which a man is praised for taking and reproducing “a fishmonger’s hard labor” and giving it away for free would be so quick to rail against a modern version of this same miracle.

Maybe they view it as blasphemy that we as human beings are now to a limited degree able to replicate what is proclaimed in accounts as god’s miracle?

I would recommend contacting the C.C.A. via a disposable email address and voice your opinion against their support of the RIAA. In doing so, please be polite, and do not use offensive language. What I wrote was a brief expose about the anti-Christian nature of the Recording and Motion Picture cartels. It may also be pointed out that p2p is use for more than distributing music. It is also used to distribute Bibles to areas where the Bible is very expensive and in many cases illegal. Recently, my website was blocked by Chinese authorities, so I have to rely on p2p to get Biblical material to my Chinese readership.

Please keep in mind that the C.C.A. states that it represents moral
and religious ideas. The C.C.A. should be aware of the types of evil that the entertainment cartels promote. Also keep in mind, that like everything else, p2p is only a technology, and it has both good and evil use. They should be made aware that we are the good guys, and the cartels are the bad guys. There’s even more great news folks. We have a venue to start the challenge off. Randy Connelly who owns the Evolution Night Club on Main Street North Bay has kindly offered to let us use his Night Club for the opening kick off of The Great Canadian Band Challenge. The Evolution Night Club, formerly Hugo Crazys Bar, has a complete new look and will be a perfect start for the opening segment of the challenge.

The Evolution Night Club also used to be the Bay Theater so there is lots of room and the accoustics inside are awesome. Randy just finished renovating the club and purchased a new sound system. It looks, feels, and sounds fantastic. Boy did we get lucky. I really want to thank Randy. The date for blast off is July 21. Other dates and times will be published on the website.

To our surprise music producer Mark Berry is interested in helping the winners of the challenge achieve fame by offering a sound production session free of charge and you can be sure that’s no small prise.
