Garageband
Garageband.com says it’s now the Net’s "Largest Source Of Legal Free Music".
Hmmmmm
Anyway, in February, 2002, things looked extremely bleak for Garageband.
A deal critical to the distribution of their records fell apart and, "To conserve cash as we endeavor to close another distribution agreement, we have pulled the garageband.com website off line," they said. "If we’re not able to accomplish something in the next few weeks, we’ll share the sad news with you and tell you how we plan to wind up our business,"
Today, under new management, so to speak, "With Vivendi-Universal’s recent shutdown of MP3.com and the domain’s sale to CNET, Garageband.com is now the internet’s largest source of legal free music," says a press release.
Interestingly, at the helm as ceo is Ali Partovi, a co-founder and director of LinkExchange, "a firm that pioneered grass-roots internet marketing".
"Jerry Harrison (of Talking Heads fame), who co-founded Garageband.com in 1999, reaffirmed his commitment, invested money in the company for the first time, and assumed the role of Chairman of the Board of Directors," says a statement. "Sir George Martin, the industry legend who discovered and produced The Beatles, also reaffirmed his position as Chairman of Garageband’s Advisory Board."
Martin didn’t exactly discover the Beatles, guys. That was Brian Epstein. Martin signed them up for the Parlophone label, produced them and was often called the Fifth Beatle.
Be that as it may, good to see Garageband has pulled it together.
