Australia: ‘Filter Conroy’ Targets Government Internet Censorship Global Herald
Filter Conroy will issue voting guides if Stephen Conroy refuses to back down. Stephen Fry is a supporter, the major internet providers in the UK indirectly support their cause and the upcoming Australian Federal Election promises a very visible worldwide platform for ‘Filter Conroy’ – a powerful internet campaign aimed at stopping the Australian Mandatory Internet Filter from becoming a reality. Whilst the online community is fully opposed to the Australian Mandatory Internet Filter with a plethora of Youtube videos, websites and cartoons devoted to villifying Stephen Conroy, the general Australian public have not yet been given a means to oppose legislation which would see the Australian Media and Communications Authority – rather than a Court – pick and choose what the Australian public sees on the internet. ‘Filter Conroy’ aims to draw a straight line between voter rights and public policy. Through the use of a special mechanism in the Victorian State voting laws, ‘Filter Conroy’ is advising voters on how to kick the main proponent of Australian internet censorship, Senator Conroy, out of office in 2010 if he insists on pushing the filter through parliament.
Moore Says Chamber of Commerce Support Evidence Consumers Like C-32 Michael Geist
In one of the strangest responses to C-32 yet, Canadian Heritage Minister James Moore told the House of Commons yesterday that consumers are supportive of C-32 and cites as evidence the Canadian Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber describes itself as Canada’s largest and most influential business association and makes no pretense of representing consumer interests.
Spies Want To Stockpile Your YouTube Clips (And Scan Them For Terror Threats) Wired
Your YouTube videos could soon be scanned and evaluated for terror threats, thanks to a new project funded by the US intelligence community that’ll create a searchable warehouse of open-source clips. Iarpa, the spy agency’s out-there research arm, is behind the program, called Automated Low-Level Analysis and Description of Diverse Intelligence Video (ALADDIN). The advent of mobile phone cams and online video hubs means thousands of clips are uploaded every day. And while the quality of UAV or spy-cam feeds is relatively consistent, and the videos usually contain similar imagery, ‘the unconstrained video clips produced by anyone who has a digital camera present a significant challenge,’ Iarpa notes.
It’s a bum rap: Barmaid fined for showing too much buttock Daily Mail
Barmaid Megan Brooks says it’s a bum rap – being booked for showing too much buttock while wearing a pair of sexy French knickers as she pulled pints in an Australian bar. She pleaded guilty today to a charge of indecent exposure after two undercover police officers, who watched her for a while as they sipped their beers decided she was showing too much of her rear. ‘Your breasts aren’t the problem,’ they told 30-year-old Miss Brooks, who was wearing a fishnet body suit and stickers on her nipples in the Market City Tavern south of Perth, Western Australia.
Aiming at Rivals, Starbucks Will Offer Free Wi-Fi New York Times
Many coffee shops try to discourage people from buying a cup of coffee and then lingering for hours to use the free Internet access. Starbucks will soon encourage them to stay as long as they want. Starbucks says its customers will have free access to some paid Web sites, like Zagat, and previews of coming movies. The company said on Monday that as of July 1, its stores in the United States would offer free Wi-Fi, via AT&T, that anyone can reach with a single click. In case customers run out of distractions on the Web, Starbucks is giving them even more reason to sit and browse, offering free online articles, music, videos and local information through a partnership with Yahoo. [And think of all the customer data they'll acquire in the process ...]
Wikipedia To Unlock Frequently Vandalized Pages Slashdot
In an effort to encourage greater participation, Wikipedia, the self-described ‘online encyclopedia that anyone can edit,’ is turning to tighter editorial control as a substitute for simply ‘locking’ those entries that frequently attract mischief makers and ideologues. The new system, which will apply to a maximum of 2,000 most-vulnerable pages, is sure to create controversies of its own.
Use of unprotected wireless connections may become legal in Finland Helsinki Times
Finland’s justice ministry said Friday that it is planning to start work on a legal reform that would allow Finns to use their neighbours’ internet connections without fear of fines. Using the internet illegally may cause the service to be slower for the owner but is easy to avoid by having a secure internet connection protected by a password.
Settlement Was Paid in Whitman Shoving Incident New York Times
During her 10 years as chief executive of eBay, Meg Whitman, the Republican candidate for governor of California, was known as a demanding leader who did not hesitate to express displeasure with employees who failed to live up to her standards. In June 2007, an eBay employee claimed that Ms. Whitman became angry and forcefully pushed her in an executive conference room at eBay’s headquarters, according to multiple former eBay employees with knowledge of the incident. They spoke on the condition of anonymity because the matter was delicate and was deemed to be strictly confidential. The employee, Young Mi Kim, was preparing Ms. Whitman for a news media interview that day. Ms. Kim, who was not injured in the incident, hired a lawyer and threatened a lawsuit, but the dispute was resolved under the supervision of a private mediator. Two of the former employees said the company paid a six-figure financial settlement to Ms. Kim, which one of them characterized as ‘around $200,000.’

Peladeau has already applied to the federal broadcast regulator for an all-news, English-language television licence after a year of personal lobbying in Ottawa. The application is reported to be for a first tier designation, meaning all cable subscribers would get the channel whether they want it or not.
CANWEST
conservative, 24-hour TV news channel to launch Jan. 1

Peladeau deflected questions about the new network’s political leanings Tuesday morning, but the writing may already be on the wall.
The CRTC is reviewing the application now. A Category 1 approval would require all cable and satellite providers, such as Rogers and Bell TV, to offer the channel.
CBC

The new channel will share resources and reporters with Sun Media and will have an emphasis on “strong personalities,” Péladeau said.
The format of the network will be hard news during the day and what is described as “straight talk” or opinion in the evening
Péladeau has plans for Sun TV News to replace the over-the-air Sun TV station in Toronto, where its new headquarters is currently under construction.
“It should be extended to as many Canadians as possible,” Péladeau said.

Having read the evidence there it seems one of the founders of TVCatchup is a particularly unsavoury character!
Mr Nicholas Parr aka Nick Parr aka Nick Parker aka Pyrogenica aka Salazar aka SlyckNick
He ran an illegal unlicensed residential care home and defrauded elderly people out of thousands of pounds and when he was caught out delayed and delayed making outrageous claims and finally tried to attempt to say the evidence was destroyed by fire. This could have been anyone’s grandmother this scumbag Nicholas Parr was ripping off, Nick Parr has no morals.
Margaret Rutherford QC said:
“The Appellants are not fit persons and their registration should be cancelled. Both Appellants have failed to maintain personal integrity, have failed to act in an honourable and truthful manner and have exploited the vulnerability of residents and their relatives/representatives.”
I noticed that Crossways, Manor Road, Seer Green, Buckinghamshire is the address used in the Care Tribunal report into Nick Parr for running unregistered residential care where the tribunal found he is not a fit person to be concerned in carrying on a residential care home
