Slyck hacked

p2pnet.net News:- Slyck was hacked over the weekend via the well-known phpBB exploit, the forums are down, and so is the site’s news section.

The hackers are claiming they did it to emphasise the exploit, says a post on the P2P Consortium.

“They could have just contacted the site admin, and told him instead of behaving in this rediculous manner,” says the great one.

It’s bad news when someone in the p2p community does something this stupid.

“It’s a shame they couldn’t just report the exploits, but I guess not everyone thinks like that,” says ToM at the Consortium, going on, “[Slyck's] Tom’s on vacation and there’s no getting hold of Ray right now, so the Slyck boards could be down for a little while yet until Ray is about to install a backup.

“Those posting serious messages over there are really just giving them what they want. :)

“About changing passwords, phpbb encrypts them in its db, so there’s no way for even an admin to retreive them, so having those leaked (shouldn’t?) be a problem. You might want to change email though.

“The couple of guys supposedly behind it are just your average CS’ers with a little too much time on their hands.”

Crackerjacker says, “Its a shame. No way was this just report of an exploit. The usual way that is done is to deface or take down the main page. This deleting of the forums was malicious. This sucks……………”

And as The Hunter sums it up, “Security should always be paramount at a site, and updates need to be applied promptly.

“That said, a dick is still a dick.”

That’s right. And we hope Ray and Tom are able to get things back to normal soon without too much agro.

that the main reason a site gets hacked to begin with is because some kid just wants attention and fame. It’s an electronic form of graffiti. Just like those guys that spray-paint swastikas on Jewish tombstones, the more publicity it gets, the more these thrill-seekers will yearn to do it again. This is not the first time for Slyck.

You know the saying, “don’t feed the trolls”? This is one case in which reporting news actually shapes future events.

Evidence is pointing toward fugitive thief, fraudster, and all-around career criminal Stephen Michael Cohen as the responsible party.

ES5 might be dead, but “sharepro” is, unfortunately, still alive and kicking.

I was on slycktom’s forum using the name of slicktom. I was just posting on their forum, the next thing that happens was I was banned!!! Well how dare they!! Then a hour later their forum got hacked.

    ok thanks.

Thanks for the info. I visited Slyck just before I visited this site and I knew immediately there was something wrong at slyck and suspected it had been hacked. These people (hackers) need to get a life. I hope their computers burn up.

One thing that may be a cause of resentment towards Slyck was the fact that their forum was powered by phpBB, yet there was no notice on the bottom of their forum pages indicating so. Over the last year someone repeatedly confronted the admins of Slyck and they replied that the credit to phpBB was in the source code. The point is that if one is using open source software, the least one could do is give full credit to the developers rather than hiding the credit.

I just hope that when Slyck upgrades its forum, that the phpBB credits are clearly visible on the bottom of the page as they are on a site like http://www.p2pforums.com/index.php (P2P Forums). We all need to show our support for open source.

just goes to show you should take precautions … keep phpBB up-to-date, back up the forum and send the database file to another location … guess slyck had to learn the hard way. *shrug*

I understand your point, and don’t think it didn’t occur to me. However, your argument would also apply to any hack, anywhere against any site and igoring it won’t stop others from doing the same. As you say, this wasn’t the first time and I doubt if a p2pnet report will make much difference one way or the other.

I did, though, deliberately include quotes from the P2P Consortium that make it clear no one thinks the perpetrators are cool or clever.

    Cheers!

More importantly, other phpBB users could use some info on the attack. Was Slyck using the current version of phpBB? Have you reported the hack to phpBB so they can warn others?
