Sony mini vs iPod Shuffle
p2pnet.net News:- On the heels of Sony’s announcement that it has a new uberlord comes further news of a new roster of cheaper portable music players, the least expensive being the 256-megabyte flash memory mini.
The new players have up to one gigabyte of storage and depending on which version, cost between $150 and $180, says the BBC, adding, ” Sony said the new devices would have 50 hours of battery life – compared to the Shuffle’s 12.”
Unlike the Shuffle, they also come with a small display screen.

An ipod mini @ $199 is a much better value or just save the 50-80% increase and go with the Apple Shuttle

The ipod mini is a hard drive-based player, and is not suitable for “active lifestyle” things like jogging or working out. You can’t go hiking with an ipod mini (unless you do more standing/sitting than you do hiking.)
50 hours battery life and a screen make this serious competition for the shuffle…not to mention you aren’t stuck with itunes-only music services…which is a problem for some people.

I take my ipod mini jogging, and it is skip free. iPods have no problem with shock and rarely skip.

iPod mini and iPod do fine with “active lifestyles” unless you intend to shake it in a manner that the hard drive can’t be accessed at all for at least 20 minutes, which is highly doubtful you’d be able to pull that off.

All the same, iPods are chained to iTunes and are much less versatile;sounds like “apple envy” to me !

First off this sony is just a rip off of a shuffle, they are chasing not innovating.
Second a shuffle, a mini, or an ipod can be used during any kind of excercise minus water events. I have a silcon “skin” for mine and have dropped it off the top of a fridge and while using a tread mill. 2 years old and never leave home without.
Do you really think this obvious apple envy device will work with any type of jukebox software. PLEASE its called business pure and simple.
And being tied to itunes isnt such a bad thing, what would you suggust? I use somebody that doesnt have superior insider knowledge of the hardwares’, software. THINK AGAIN
Until you see apple copy somebodies else, there will always be apple envy
and we as consumers are that much better off for their innovations!
March 8th, 2005 at 8:01 pm
Their innovations? Apple doesnt innovate anything with ipods, thats all outsourced work. Then again, I guess you’re just another Apple zombie that doesnt realize this that suck anything in that jobs’s mob will pump out. Apple go big, they turn sue happy, more like hypocrism to me.

There has been many flash based mp3 players before the ipod shuffle. I don’t understand why people are so obsessed about Apple. It’s not the only company out there. Competition is good for us consumers.
March 8th, 2005 at 8:48 pm
The innovation is the fact that this hardware/software works. First time/ last time/ every time
And what mp3 player do u all use? Use an apple and you will understand why the apple crowd is so happy to tell you how much better theirs is to yours.
lol

I bought a riovolt as my first mp3 player. I had waited for a disc based player forever..I carry over 200 gigs of music in my car, how bout you? Im waiting for a DVD-ROM partable mp3 player. Ill buy that on pure economics. 36cents per 4.4 gigs of mp3. mmmm, nice. Apple in no way innovated anything with regards to mp3, except making an incompatable nightmare player with a defective battery that was only fixed when an unhappy consumer tagged all thier outdoor print ads. Anyone remember that? Great customer support there. Anyway, Apple makes nice products, but there is always a catch – just like the computers. I am a computer worker/gamer so I choose crappy windows. Apple did not invent the portable music player. Sony did. The Walkman. That was the innovation that allowed for all this, and Apple is JUST another electronics company that uses fancy colors and cases with a brilliant OS due to the basis of the code. But, it’s not compatable with the majority of code written in the world today. In computers, niche is not a good thing. Linux does the same thing on PC hardware.

I don’t understand why people are so quick to jump on the “Yeah but it only work’s with iTunes” bandwagon… What’s up with that.
It works with AAC, MP3, unprotected WMA (I believe) and also AIFF. So what’s the alternative?
A machine that works with Protected WMA files I suppose… Ogg Voribis? What else???
Not too limiting considering the vast majority of people use just plain old vanilla MP3 files, which in my poinion is the most popular format out there.
So I guess Apple is guilty of supporting the vast majority of consumers out there – except I suppose the complainers and the Anti-Apple camp.
Too bad for them – go buy a Sony and shut the trap.

Yes they are Apple innovations because it is their ideas and designs that then get outsourced to other companies to build.
What computer/consumer electronic company doesn’t do this?
Christ even Sony does this.
Get off the high horse Apple hater – and get real.
