Napster’s rent-an-mp3

p2pnet.net News:- As part of its $30 million marketing campaign, Napster II says it’s going to promote its rent-an-mp3 service by turning, “hip venues in New York, Austin, Los Angeles and Nashville into Napster To Go Cafes” and giving away “free fills and refills” of digital music along with iriver, Creative and Dell mp3 players.

Hip venues, eh?

Wheeeee!

Napster II owner Roxio-that-was earnestly hopes this will persuade punters to buy into its $15-a-month service whereby you get to rent Napster II offerings you can play only so long as you keep forking out.

When you stop, the music dies. Totally dies.

As John Grubber sums it up on his Daring Fireball blog:

“So, for example, you could join Napster To Go tomorrow, pay $180 to maintain your subscription during the next year, and during that time, download tens of thousands of music tracks. But if you cancel your subscription next year, all of that music will stop working. It will stop working on your computer, and it will stop working on your little Napster-compatible portable player.”

Not only but also, even while you’re subscribed, “you need to frequently re-sync your player to your network-connected PC, even if you haven’t downloaded more music, just so your player’s DRM software can check the status of your subscription,” as Grubber points out.

Back to the Napster II rent-a-track, if you’re looking for a laugh, go to:

  • Austin, TX March 17, Speakeasy – private SXSW party with Carson Daly and MTV’s Bam Margera 10pm – 4am
  • Los Angeles, CA March 30, Mel’s Drive-In 8585 W Sunset Blvd 8pm – 10pm
  • Nashville, TN April 4th Jackson’s 1800 21, Ave S 4pm – 6pm

Who knows? You might win an mp3 player ; )

Ponzi Scheme, as long as you pay, you can listen. As soon as you stop, the music stops. total BS!

Correction, people who dont know how to extract drm files loose there songs. Nothing is stopping anyone from ripping the song as it plays. It is illegal but there is no way to know of it. If you dont know what im talking about all you need is a program that runs through the mp3s rerecords them and saves them. It can be all automated. just let your computer run for a week or so and have all your songs converted.
