Slyck is back online
p2pnet.net News:- Slyck is back, having been hacked last weekend, after falling prey to the much-publicized phpBB exploit.
Forums and news section both went south, although a small and temporary post site functioned as a stop-gap.
The people behind the hack claimed they did it to emphasise the exploit, said a post on the P2P Consortium.
But as a post said, “They could have just contacted the site admin, and told him instead of behaving in this ridiculous manner.”
“This happened at the worst possible time,” Tom Mennecke told p2pnet.
“Ray and I were both on vacation on opposite ends of the world and were not able to coordinate with each other.
“Fortunately, our moderator staff is top notch and we were able to limp along until Ray returned home.”
Mennecke is still on vacation, but everything now seems back to normal. Almost.
Everything is being restored, posts Ray.
“I just wanted to get things back to a semi-normal state. As far as passwords go, someone had mentioned that they were only able to access the hash codes. That is also very INCORRECT. They were only able to change passwords to accounts, but not able to actually see what they were or see what the hash was, so i would not be worried. All accounts are now back to their original status as of 2 weeks ago.
“Yes, we lost 2 weeks of posts.
“Systems are being put in place to ensure that nothing like this happens again, and I will transfer over the users that had registered during the downtime tomorrow morning, as i am just too tired now and want to go to bed after a long trip home.
“I am so sorry to everyone for what has happened. Know that I am going to do everything possible to use this experience as a way of making slyck stronger and more secure. thanx all.”
