File sharing like 1920s Prohibition: Jenner

p2pnet view Music | P2P:- Pink Floyd manager Peter Jenner (right) appears to be at distinct odds with the band.

Pink Floyd is a member of the anti-P2P, anti-file sharing Featured Artists Coalition, active supporters of the UK section of the entertainment cartel Three Strikes plan which would see people lose their online accounts following Hollywood and Big music allegations of ‘illegal’ filesharing, with ISPs acting as the snouts.

Now emeritus president of the International Music Managers’ Forum (IMMF), Jenner “launched a scathing attack on the music industry’s tactics at a Westminster e-Forum”, says PC Pro.

“Attempts to stop people copying are clearly a waste of time,” said Jenner. “Not only are they a waste of time, they make the law offensive. They are comparable to prohibition in the US in the 1920s.

“It’s absurd to expect ordinary members of the public to think about what they’re allowed to do [with CDs, digital downloads, etc]… and then ask themselves whether it’s legal or not.”

The music industry has to “consider entirely rewriting copyright law and find new revenue models” to preserve it, he says inthe story, adding:

“We have to start thinking radically. Copyright is about the right to copy. We cannot control people’s right to copy if they have computers.”

Vivendi Universal, EMI, Warner Music and Sony Music know all that, Peter.

But this isn’t about file sharing. It’s about gaining exclusive control of the internet for ‘product’ marketing, sales and distribution.

Claiming they’re being “devastated’ by filesharers is little more than a device — a spratt to catch the herring.

Stay tuned.

You’re absolutely right. Personal use copying, what they call “piracy” actually generates sales. (Like payola in the 50’s)

Which is why real net neutrality is so important. President Obama’s supposed support of Net Neutrality was canceled out by ACTA. You can’t legislate away progress.

Pink floyd was one of the best music on the scene for the 20th century. It was still not that great compared to the music of the 19th Century though and this was distressing since we always expect to see thing getting better not worst.

Producing art following no rule and being lousy, dropping a small crappy and ugly tune in few minutes on the table and turn it into a song with a non-sense lyric that took few minutes as well to wrote, talking non-sense on a beat and calling it pompously “”rap music”" is never going to go far.

I am hoping that with internet and once the corporate parasites are out of the picture the 21st century will catch-up with a new generation of artist with talents and ready to work very hard following rules and making their art beautiful.

I know that this is their dream or corporate parasites but it is impossible. Even if they were to take over the internet, internet replacements are waiting in the dark to take off not even requiring an ISP.

When and if needed, I have no doubt that everyone will move to it and the corporations will owe an empty internet with nobody!

Does a rock group technically even exist any more if they don’t release new music or play anywhere? I wonder if they even got a replacement keyboardist.
