Wal-Mart music goes online
Wal-Mart Stores has started testing its online music service which, at 88¢ per download, undercuts the 99¢ the rest of the korporate music klan appear to be trying to establish as the de facto standard.
“Download Any Song – Just 88¢. Download, burn and listen to thousands of your favorite songs, it says here.
It hasn’t said whether or not it negotiated lower rates for its music.
It also appears to have another major distinction over the other sites, and one which should appeal to parents.
The company will stick to the same content format as found on CD racks in Wal-Mart stores, “which don’t sell music with content the company deems offensive,” an Associated Press story quotes Walmart.com spokeswoman Cynthia Lin as saying, going on:
“On the Web site, the company notes that some songs are flagged as ‘edited’ to denote a song was recorded without offensive lyrics.”
That’ll let out a good whack of standard music industry fare.
