Hatch gets top copyright job

p2pnet.net News:- Any hopes you may have had of seeing senator Orrin ‘Terminator’ Hatch go the way of the DoDo now he’s been replaced by Arlen Specter as chairman of the Senate Judiciary panel, have been dashed.

Hatch, who tried to drive the anti-p2p INDUCE Act through congress on behalf of the entertainment industry, is the new chairman of the Senate Intellectual Property subcommittee responsible for overseeing the US Copyright Office and drafting legislation and treaties relating to copyright and patent laws.

His answer to alleged p2p copyright infringers was to have their computers remotely blown up. He later qualified his suggestion by saying, “I do not favor extreme remedies unless no moderate remedies can be found.”

This earned him the sobriquet ‘Terminator’ after the governor of California’s equally destructive bio-droid.

Hatch is also infamous for making loud and very public ‘mistakes’ about p2p technologies that incorrectly paint them as the enemy of all that’s good and holy, and which are subsequently reproduced as gospel by the mainstream media.

“A few years ago, Hatch was one of the more vocal Washington critics of the Recording Industry Association of America,” CNET News points out.

“He urged the RIAA to be more flexible in licensing music to online distributors and even called a federal appeals court decision against Napster ‘shortsighted from a policy perspective.’ But when Napster’s progeny arose in the form of peer-to-peer networks, Hatch’s political views seemed to flip-flop. Instead of defending novel – and disruptive – technologies, Hatch became one of their most vocal political antagonists.”

    God help us all,

Even here in Canada or Europe the trickle down effect of the US’s horrendous domestic policies (ie DMCA) influences our policies and literally encroaches our sovereignty and other nations sovereignty.

    tragically,
    TT

I wish consumers would see what limiting and restrictive laws this guy promotes, and simultaneously see the Mercedes driving Sharp Suit wearing fools he backs, then you’d read the real story.
Sorry this guy is dangerous to his constituents but probably just landed himself in a position where he no longer needs to answer to them, his position is most likely sponsored by the deep pockets he has succombed to.
    Sorry about spellings.
    John

Any hopes of DMCA reform being championed in the house are now firmly dashed with this disgusting sell out’s appointment to yet another IP committe.

But theyre running out of different names to give the same function hatch.. guess what, youre out for good the next time.

Senator Hatch is a songwriter for those of you that didn’t know. In 2003 he made approx $18,000 in royalties, and approx. $34,000 in 2004. He has a vested interest in the battle, one that will most likely result in the continueing sham hearings, with the RIAA and MPAA being given a warm welcome, and those from the tech fields, being put on the burner (like was done to the Intel guy last year.)

Imagine the outcry about “conflict of interest” if say Shawn Fanning were on that panel, on a Jon Johannson, or any of the execs from any of the p2p companies.

Can’t we get rid of this freaking idiot?

I’m at a loss of words – a first for me.
