Britain Number 1 Zombie Spot

p2pnet.net News:- With a new honey pot study saying threats posed by botnets are probably worse than originally believed comes news that bots are using their own p2p networks on random ports, “and even POP3, to talk, making them decentralized and harder to shut down”.

Now, Britain is their favourite country, says Computer Business, quoting a Symantec report.

The Honeynet Project uses networks of computers as “honey pots” to attract hacker-hijackers and garner information about how they work.

“Even if we are very optimistic and estimate that we track a significant percentage of all botnets and all of our tracked botnet IRC servers are not modified to hide JOINs or obfuscate the joining clients IPs, this would mean that more then one million hosts are compromised and can be controlled by malicious attackers,” it says,

Symantec’s Internet Security Threat Report for the second half of 2004 says Britain has the unenviable #1 spot for bots with 25.2% of zombie PCs located there.

Numbers two is the US (24.6%), China (7.8%) is number three, Canada (4.9%) number four and Spain (3.8%) number five.

“It’s the boom that’s doing it, Symantec speculated,” says Computer Business.

“There are millions more broadband subscribers in the UK now than there were a year ago, but not enough have yet learned that a raw, unfiltered, permanent internet connection is a security risk.”
