Walmart sued by 1.5 million women

p2pnet view P2P:- Walmart has in the past bragged it’s not only the world’s largest retailer, it’s also the largest employer.

And that’s coming back to bite it.

Most of its employees are women and now it’s trying to argue a class action brought against it should be dropped because of that.

It’s appealing an April court ruling “which authorised the class-action litigation on behalf of an estimated 1.5 million women workers”, says Al Jazerra.

The women say the company practised widespread discrimination in its pay and promotion practices.

But “The class is larger than the active-duty personnel in the army, navy, air force, marines, and coast guard combined – making it the largest employment class action in history by several orders of magnitude,” Walmart says, according to the story.

It was authorised by a divided 9th Circut US Court of Appeals in April by a 6-5 decision, it says, adding:

“The lawsuit was allowed to proceed on the grounds that its mere size should not be a reason to dismiss the case.

But Walmart lawyers insisted the six women leading the case “should sue individually” — otherwise the size of the class action “made it impossible to defend against”.

(Cheers, RW)

  1. Bob Says:

When I worked at Wal-Mart (for four years), it was the opposite: women were overrepresented in all managerial positions. Out of some thirty department managers, maybe five were men–maybe. Obviously that isn’t necessarily representative of the company as a whole, but it used to bug the crap outta me.

I know a guy who was hired last year at Macy’s who also stated that he was being paid $10 an hour while his lady co-workers $8, it’s not fair. There are single mothers who work just as hard or even harder and get a lower pay, this has got to stop.
