Spammers attack Apple’s Ping social network Help Net Security
Scammers and spammers have deluged the new Ping musical social network, created by Apple and built into the new version of iTunes. Ping is a cross-between Facebook and Twitter, giving over 160 million iTunes users the ability to build networks of friends and musicians, and read comments by other fans.
Google faces Texas AG inquiry, settles privacy suit Reuters
Google Inc said on Friday it was the target of an investigation by the Texas Attorney General’s office into the fairness of its search engine rankings. The world No. 1 search engine company said the probe is the first by a U.S. legal authority into the fairness of its rankings, which can make or break commercial websites. Google faces a similar probe by the European Commission, prompted by complaints from some small websites that felt they were unfairly hurt by low Google search rankings.
Facebook testing ‘subscribe to’ user feature Telegraph
New service is ‘tool for stalkers’, say critics. Facebook is testing out a new feature that will enable users to get notifications whenever another Facebook user uses the social-networking site to update their status or share photos with friends. The “subscribe to” feature allows Facebook users to select which friends or family members they want to receive “alerts” from whenever there is any activity on their Facebook profile. “We are testing this feature with a small percentage of users,” said Facebook in a statement. “It lets people subscribe to friends and pages to receive notifications whenever the person they’ve subscribed to updates their status or posts new content, such as photos, videos, links, or notes.” Some industry watchers have criticised the new feature, saying it amounts to a ‘stalking tool’.
Symantec Snoop Dogg rap contest site rickrolled The Register
Symantec’s attempts to link up with Snoop Dogg to launch a cybercrime rap contest have descended into farce after it emerged that vulnerabilities with a dedicated site can be easily rickrolled. The HackIsWack.com site was reportedly taken down for maintenance on Tuesday but still harbours cross site scripting security problems, as illustrated here. Would-be rappers are invited to post a rap on the topic of cybercrime for a chance to win ticket to a Snoop gig in LA and a laptop running Norton Internet Security 2011. The contest is restricted to US residents and has attracted just seven entries thus far. The security problems with the site prompted one wag to ask: “Did they hire Snoop Dog as just a spokesman or did he also write the code?” on Twitter, a negative remark embarrassingly replayed on the site because it used the dedicated #hackiswack tag.
90’s game hero Duke Nukem returns after delay of more than a decade BetaNews
2K Games and Gearbox Software announced they will be releasing Duke Nukem Forever on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Windows PC in 2011. The game was first announced in 1997 and has long been considered the most legendary case of “vaporware,” that is, hardware or software that is announced but released either too late or not at all. The story of Duke Nukem Forever is so legendary that its delay inspired its own parody game franchise. D3’s Eat Lead: The Return of Matt Hazard was released in 2009, and featured a gun-slinging action game hero very similar to Nukem returning to video games after a six-year hiatus.
The Struggle for What We Already Have New York Times
For something that seems so simple and straightforward, “net neutrality” has sure created one big mess. Net neutrality, of course, is the principle that Internet service providers should not be allowed to favor some Internet content over other content by delivering it faster. Really, who could be against such a thing? President Obama came out for net neutrality during his presidential campaign. Julius Genachowski, his former law review colleague and basketball buddy, who helped him arrive at that campaign position, is now the chairman of the Federal Communication Commission. Right-thinking public interest groups, like Public Knowledge (“Fighting for your digital rights in Washington”) are fierce, unyielding proponents of net neutrality, viewing its goodness as obvious. Google professes to be a champion of net neutrality. So does Skype. Even the Internet service providers say they favor it. And yet, here we are, a year and a half into the Obama presidency, and net neutrality is no closer to being encoded in federal regulation than it was when George W. Bush was president.
