UN telecom chief says BlackBerry maker RIM should compromise on data-sharing Canadian Press
The chief of the UN’s telecommunications agency urged the Canadian maker of the BlackBerry to allow law enforcement agencies access to customer data, saying that governments all over the world had legitimate security concerns which should not be ignored. The International Telecommunication Union agency’s Secretary-General Hamadoun Toure said that all governments engaged in the fight against terrorism had the right to demand access to users’ information from the maker of the BlackBerry — Waterloo, Ont.-based Research in Motion Ltd.  “Those are genuine requests,” he told The Associated Press on Wednesday. “There is a need for co-operation between governments and the private sector on security issues.”

Ping on iTunes: Not So Hot PC World
Apple’s big overhaul of iTunes, announced Wednesday, turns the media management software into a fledgling social network thanks to a newly introduced feature called Ping. I would have expected more from Apple with this first attempt at building a community around iTunes. It’s not all bad, but if Ping doesn’t improve soon this music-oriented social network will bomb faster than an American Idol wannabe.

Woman Wins Libel Suit By Suing Wrong Website
Slashdot
It appears that Cincinnati Bengals cheerleader Sarah Jones and her lawyer were so upset by a comment on the site TheDirty.com that they missed the ‘y’ at the end of the name. Instead, they sued the owner of TheDirt.com, whose owner didn’t respond to the lawsuit. The end result was a judge awarding $11 million, in part because of the failure to respond. Now, both the owners of TheDirty.com and TheDirt.com are complaining that they’re being wrongfully written about in the press — one for not having had any content about Sarah Jones but being told it needs to pay $11 million, and the other for having the content and having the press say it lost a lawsuit, even though no lawsuit was ever actually filed against it.

Stephen Hawking says universe not created by God Guardian
God did not create the universe, the man who is arguably Britain’s most famous living scientist says in a forthcoming book. In the new work, The Grand Design, Professor Stephen Hawking argues that the Big Bang, rather than occurring following the intervention of a divine being, was inevitable due to the law of gravity.

SAS to host first mile-high gay wedding The Local
Scandinavian airline SAS has begun the search for a suitable couple to walk down the aisle after announcing plans to play host to the first-ever airborne gay wedding in December. “It will be a very traditional wedding,” SAS spokesman Anders Lindström told AFP. “There will be wedding cake and dancing in the aisles.” SAS is accepting entries from gay couples who wanted to celebrate their nuptials mid-flight from Stockholm to New York on December 6th, with the winning entry will be chosen by an online vote. The airline said it would pay for the winners’ tickets, hotels and honeymoon in Los Angeles, and cater the on-board banquet, albeit with a special wedding menu instead of normal passenger fare.
