Natalie Gray sues Toronto cops for $1 million
p2pnet view Freedom | P2P:- Stephen Harper’s farcical G20 mutual admiration fest has already cost Canadians well over a billion dollars.
Now it could cost us even more.
Natalie Gray, 20, says she was “shot twice by what she believes were rubber bullets as she peacefully protested during the summit”, says 680 News.
She was arrested and then, says the story >>>
- She was driven around in a police car for apx. 30 minutes before she was taken to hospital to receive treatment for her injuries.
- She was then taken to detention centre, located on Eastern Avenue, where she was taunted by police officers; denied access to her asthma medication; strip searched; and not allowed to speak to a lawyer despite her repeated requests.
- She was detained for apx. 30 hours before being released on bail.
Gray was later set free without being charged with anything.
Representing her, Clay Ruby and Brian Shiller say she’ll “seek $1 million in damages from the Toronto Police Services Board as well as individual police officers for assault and battery, unlawful arrest and detention, malicious prosecution and violations of her constitutional rights”, says the Toronto Star.
Stay tuned.

But of course, criminal charges against the officers who CLEARLY COMMITTED VIOLENT CRIMES of unlawful arrest and detention will NEVER be pursued. We can’t have the thug enforcers subject to the same laws as the ‘little people’ now can we?
Apparently unlawful arrest is something the gov’t would like to happen more often? Heck, why not just let the cops shoot to kill anyone who gives them ‘lip’ or ‘attitude’.

just seeing the numbers in the title is enough to know in what part of the milky this took place.
mostly that turns my stomach but in this case i make an exception.

She needs to turn this into a class action suit.

@RW: “Heck, why not just let the cops shoot to kill anyone who gives them ‘lip’ or ‘attitude’.”
Heck, indeed why not ? Once they are all dead the security price tag for the next G8 and G20 would be a lot less.
Ok, jokes aside. I have a hard time having any sympathy for the protesters, they put themselves in the situation in the fisrt place. Why protest these summit ? It’s a complete waste of time. The world leader at the summit are certainly not listening to what the protesters have to say. Their message is lost in the background noise. So why go thru the motion ? They have professional protesters going to these meeting and their goal is to incite violence. Why put yourself in the middle of this ?
I know, the other side is asking, why hold these meeting ? What do they achieve ? I say, probably not much.
Some argue the cost involved. Sure, it’s a big waste of money. But these meeting would not cost much if it wasn’t for the need to protect the meeting against those professional protesters that follow them around the world.
Are those protests the way to stop these meeting ? Certainly not. Regular folks watching this on TV, cannot and don’t understand the message from the protesters. All they see is the violence. Big waste of time and energy.
I wish everybody would wise up and find better way to hash out their desagreement.

@Captain555:
It is their legal right to protest, but very true, the media ignored most things, choosing to focus on the violence (I’m sure those violent groups new this would happen, they can’t be that stupid) which results in a complete loss of the message the protesters were hoping to get across.
And with so many groups trying to make their voices heard, you also have a mish-mash of messages, instead of one or two clear messages that anyone watching the news could focus on.
But to say “they put themselves in the situation in the first place” is not helpful at all. All that does is demonstrate that you don’t care for any messages protesters were trying to make, nor do you care for the legal right to protest. Once you remove the right to protest, how will you really get noticed? Ever try to even get a complaint through the system? It is ridiculously slow and cumbersome for a reason, to minimize the chances of “the people” making changes.
This was a setup from the get-go. Our federal government does not like any form of dissent. I would not be surprised if an independent query (which won’t happen, only fake ones will) concluded that the Black Bloc were allowed to do as they did, in order to give reason for the mass arrests and to try to spread the message “don’t protest, it’s a wast of time and energy, just do as you are told.”

@ Robert
Can’t disagree with much of what you say. Indeed there is a legal right to protest.
Unfortunately, those professional protesters, and it is always the same group, have hijacked the process. Maybe you’re right that the police has given them just enough rope in hope they would hang themselves, but they still did it. I’m sorry, but a guy with a bandana in his face that throw a mailbox thru a store window, deserve to go to jail, no matter what the excuse is.
And nobody can plead ignorance. It’s been like that for years now, wether it is in Europe, Asia or North America, they are there and they create trouble. So the peaceful protester who are robbed of their legal right to protest, should complain to those professional protesters, not to the police or to us for that matter. Who will pay for that million bucks ? Us again. Taxpayer.

@Captain555,
Agreed, if only the police didn’t run, but instead swarmed the Black Bloc, I’ve seen video footage before that group started their chaos, and the police left the area. Why? Why didn’t they swarm and stop the group? People were standing around and many were there for peace, so they were not the type physically able to stop the Black Bloc for fear of a physical response.
So why didn’t the police simply swarm the group? They could have, they could have left and went around surrounding them. They could not be so blind to not see the Black Bloc forming, then marching as they had cameras all over and people on the street.
And I’d have no objection to the police kettling the Black Bloc group, not straight up beating, but kettling. But they didn’t, they chose to kettle hours later in a completely different area.
That’s a total waste of money, as now we’ll have judges and tax-payer-paid lawyers defending people, prosecutors charging people, all because of a very poorly managed summit security force.
September 9th, 2010 at 4:43 pm
The black bloc is allowed to do what they want for a good while to justify more stringent controls of ‘protest’. Its happened all over the western world, and until the politico’s wind up with total power, it will continue to do so if we allow it.
The primary enemy of any political party in power is their own populace, those who have the real power in the country, the power to depose. The government should fear the people, the people should not fear the government.

If we simply pay lips service to folks rights instead of defending them we can only expect others to pay lip service to our rights, in 20 – 50 years time these images of club weilding policementwill be seen as the equivalent of jack booted brownshirts doing what they have been ordered to. Its wrong to commit or incite violence and even more wrong when its used by the state to oppress.

A full Public Inquiry is needed.
The CPC is recruiting ex military & police officers to become Members of Parliament.
We must not develop into a Police State.
