Intel anti-trust finding
p2pnet.net News:- Chipzilla has “reluctantly” agreed to change its business practices in Japan where it was found to have illegally used its market power, “to squeeze out rival Advanced Micro Devices”.
Intel KK, Intel’s Japanese subsidiary “accepts” the recommendation of the Japan Fair Trade Commission, issued almost a month ago, “though the company ‘does not agree with the facts underlying the JFTC’s allegations and the application of law’,” says Computer Business, going on:
“The recommendation requires Intel to cease and desist from practices that the JFTC says distorted competition by requiring OEM partners to buy all or almost all of their chips from Intel in order to secure significant rebates.”
It’s unclear if the JFTC will assess a penalty or fine Intel, says Information Week, also pointing out the agency has been conducting an anti-trust probe against Intel since last year over alleged unfair business practices in Japan.
“We believe the recommendation’s cease-and-desist provisions define a workable framework that enables us to continue to provide competitive pricing to our customers, and benefits consumers and the Japanese economy,” Bruce Sewell, Intel vp and general counseis quoted as saying.
“We do not accept the recommendation’s allegations in its fact findings and the application of law. We believe the allegations misinterpret important aspects of our business practices and fail to take into account the competitive environment within which Intel and its customers compete.”
