Broadband and p2p in Europe

p2pnet.net News:- What has an explosion in broadband adoption meant to Europe given that theoretically, “greater access to broadband opens the door for illegal, P2P-based song downloads, leading to a decreased interest in CD sales”? – asks digital music news.

It depends on country you’re talking about, says the post, quoting data from screendigest.

In Germany, overall music sales declined by nearly 40% between \ 1999 and 2003, “a period characterized by a rapid increase in broadband adoption”.

But countries such as Spain, Denmark, and Italy “faced less severe declines for the same period” and in the UK, music sales continue to increase year after year.

“According to data recently published by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI), English consumers purchased an average of 3.2 discs in 2004,” says digital music news.

“That is far greater than the worldwide average, and is part of a very strong sales story over the past few years. Most recently, a total of 174.6 million units were sold in the UK last year, a 4.5% increase over 2003 figures. Paid downloads also rose in Britain by 4%, hitting 5.7 million online transactions.”

So why is the BPI, owned by the Big Four record label cartel, accusing Britons who share music online with each other of devastating the music industry?

    bullshit!
broadband is accessible to masses aproximately arround 2000 in germany. so why the sales droped in the years before? quality of the content?
and germany has a lower penetration rate of broadband connection than most of the other EU-countries(recently read in one of the major news papers). so it’s not only the fault of p2p. give us a break, please.
