911 for Cdn VoIP services
p2pnet.net News:- The 911 emergency line is fundamental to telephone service in Canada and firms wanting to offer VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) will have to include it, says the CRTC, Canada’s telecommunications regulator.
However, the decision applies only to VoIP companies offering fixed service, defined by the CRTC as, “providers who only allow users of their service to place a telephone call from the location where their service is being provided,” says Digital Home Canada, going on:
“In today’s ruling the commission said that VoIP service providers providing either nomadic VoIP service or foreign exchange VoIP would be required to implement an interim solution which provides a level of service comparable to Basic 911 service within 90 days.”
The CRTC (Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission ) says users of nomadic VoIP service can make calls from any location where they can get access to Internet service.

Digital Home Canada - CRTC Issues 911 Ruling for VoIP Providers, April 4, 2005

Give the CRTC credit for setting an aggressive timeline. 3 months is extremely short-term for telcos and not an easy milestone to meet in project management – LNP took over a year to implement, for example – but at least this decision stresses the overall urgency and importance of a life-and-death service to Canadians.
