Cdn copyright petition lodged
p2pnet.net News:- Canadians concerned about the attempts to have Canada’s Copyright Act re-written to suit the largely US-based entertainment industry have gained an important victory.
Today, MP Peter Julian introduced a batch of signatures for the Petition for Users Rights in parliament.
More than a thousand people have signed so far and MPs will continue to hand in additions by batches.
“Petitioners want this house to maintain the balance between the rights of the public and the rights of the creators,” said Julian.
“They demand that the government not extend the term of copyright, and preserve all existing users’ rights to ensure a vibrant public domain.
“The petitioners also call upon parliament to ensure that users are recognized as interested parties and are meaningfully consulted about any proposed changes to the copyright act.”
If Canadian heritage minister Liza Frulla has her way, the Big Four record labels will soon be feeding their self-interested propaganda messages directly to Canadian children in schools.
And, “We’ll also be addressing the peer-to-peer issue,” she says. “It will give the tools to companies and authors to sue.”
In the US and Britain, school children are now instructed in copyright law based on material supplied by the entertainment industry, as well as reading, writing and arithmetic.
Also backing plans to re-write the copyright act, which would then enable the Big Music cartel to sue Canadians in the same way it sues Americans who share music with each other online, is industry minister David Emerson, with the CRIA (Canadian Recording Industry Association of America) cheering in the wings.
However, as professor Michael Geist, Canada Research Chair in Internet and E-commerce Law and a law professor at the University of Ottawa, said recently, “File sharing is certainly here to stay and the lawsuits and attempts at new legislation are attempts to put the toothpaste back in the tube.”

I sent a thank-you letter to Peter Julian

My hope is that if one of the opposition parties becomes more aware of the real issues being discussed that this may change the position of parliament and the government.
Please sign the petition, and try to talk to your member of parliament. We need to ensure that they realize that constituents are not on the side of CRIA and the other dinosaurs.
