ABC, CBS, NBC, say No! to Google TV
p2pnet view Advertising | TV:- ABC, CBS and NBC are temporarily thwarting efforts by Google to use their programming in its bid to add TV to its list of on- and offline advertising promotional tools.
It has plans to use people’s TV sets and their living rooms to foist itself and its adstuff on them.
Logitech International and Sony have already started trying to sell boxes running Gargle software to consumers.
But the three television majors are blocking TV programming on their websites from being viewable on Google ‘s web-TV, “exposing the rift between it “and some of the media companies it wants to supply content for its new products”, says the Wall Street Journal.
They’re “skeptical that Google can provide a business model that would compensate them for potentially cannibalizing existing broadcast businesses”, says the story.
In other words, it’s a bargaining tool as they ‘negotiate’ with Eric and the Boyz for maximum returns.
Rupert Murdoch’s Fux Broadcasting and MTV “confirmed they are not currently blocking Google TV, but a spokeswoman said ‘a firm decision has not yet been reached’ News Corp”, says the Wall Street Journal.
“For its part, Google has tried to assure broadcasters and content owners such as Disney that Google TV’s search feature is optimized to promote their TV broadcasts and own websites’ video content rather than pirated content, according to a person familiar with the matter”, says the story, going on:
“In addition, Google has also told broadcasters and content owners they can submit requests to Google to delete unauthorized results from the Google TV search feature, just like they do for results in Google’s traditional Web search engine, this person said.”
Google “won’t directly make money from the sale of the Google TV software” states the post, “but the software’s use will benefit Google’s ad-supported Web search engine and is expected to increase viewership of the ad-supported YouTube site, which is owned by Google.
It’s also “been in talks with Madison Avenue’s media-buying firms to discuss how to sell ads on the Google TV interface without interfering with TV commercials, people familiar with the matter have said”, it ads.
Google ads not interferring with other ads? heh

“says someone familiar with the matter” that’s reassuring. Think they could be any more vague? They are trying to protect the person relaying the information, but to be honest, it makes the news sound less credible, especially on a topic like this. I could understand the protection for “national security” issues, but commercial exploits? WTF?
I’ve seen news media get some yahoo’s opinion and the opinion is so void of any fact that any time I read “someone familiar with the matter” it makes me think that’s who they are protecting, some yahoo who is just guessing.
“familiar with the matter” really doesn’t give a feeling of confidence with me.
For example, I am familiar with the matter of TCP/IP protocols, but don’t ask me to build you a bitTorrent application from scratch (at least not without the web for a ridiculous amount of help).

Thank goodness for that! The last thing anyone needs is more ways to bypass expensive cable subscriptions and be able to watch TV right off the net!

The Networks PUT their content on the web, but now don’t want it viewed from the web??? What am I missing?
Oh, I get it. They did it to look good, hip, with-it, part of the new media age. They just didn’t want it to catch on… Is that it?
I pull up a web browser hooked to my Home Theater PC and it all works fine. I hook it up to a web browser on my Revue and it doesn’t. Someone doesn’t have their head on straight!
