LimeWire is dead: official

p2pnet view P2P:- “As of today, we are required to stop distribution and support of LimeWire’s P2P file-sharing service as a result of a court-ordered injunction”, says CEO George Searle on the company blog.

“Naturally, we’re disappointed with this turn of events”, he says, continuing >>>

We are extremely proud of our pioneering history and have, for years, worked hard to bridge the gap between technology and content rights holders. However, at this time, we have no option but to cease further distribution and support of our software.

It’s a sad occasion for our team, and for you – the hundreds of millions of people who have used LimeWire to discover new things.

While we have enabled open sharing and discovery for the past decade, LimeWire is mostly the product of the people who used it. You made LimeWire. Thank you for letting us being part of that. Your support and enthusiasm has fueled everything that we do.

During this challenging time, we are excited about the future. The injunction applies only to the LimeWire product. Our company remains open for business.

We remain deeply committed to working with the music industry and making the act of loving music more fulfilling for everyone – including artists, songwriters, publishers, labels, and of course music fans.

Our team of technologists and music enthusiasts are creating a completely new music service that puts you back at the center of your digital music experience.

“We’ll be sharing more details about our new service and look forward to bringing it to you in the future”, says Searle.

Stay tuned.

(Cheers, Andrew aka Comeoncomcast)

Oh yeah and we know what that means don’t we? Paid for content, likely infected with DRM.

Welcome to another undead Napster 2.0. (rolleyes)

  2. Quartz Says:

A predictable end to a loaded court case, big media makes yet another fatal mistake, scattering filesharers to the winds will not force anyone to cease their hobby but it will ensure they diversify and use the latest tech to hide themselves, only a fool would think they had scored any victory here, they have it seems simply signalled they care little for the future and hastened their own demise and in the same action made it easier for folks to justify sharing copyright content, oppression and repression leads to resistance.

  3. Orbit Says:

I’m sure bot operators will not be happy no more Noob P2P users to infect with their trojans

I stopped using these kinds of P2P programs years ago too many infected and fake files

  4. Anonymous Says:

And in other news, the Gnutella network is still in full operation, with copies of Limewire and Frostwire freely available elsewhere on the net; while for those who would rather avoid Gnutella altogether, there is even more content available via torrents, DC, Usenet, Rapidshare, video sharing sites, and of course, Google.

Congratulations, parasites. You have achieved nothing.

  5. Jon Says:

^^ Google is Number One. ;-)

    True.

    Cheers!

  6. Ebabe Says:

I love Limewire! PRO was the best deal cuz it was inexpensive. The record companies have made enough money but sorry CD’s have gone extinct! The economy sucks and times change but everyone has to change with the times. Now the recording studios are pissed off because they have to work harder instead of sit on their ass and bank off the artist. The artist has always had to make money by touring so that is nothing new but don’t expect to live the rich lifestyle by selling CD’s anymore. Those days are gone and the internet is King! Paying $1 or more for one song on iTunes and others is a rip-off. Someone is definitely making money so don’t give me that shit!
~My iPod and Limewire were like two peas in a pod. You will be missed.

  7. Quartz Says:

I would advise anyone who wishes to hoard a few copies of limewire to do so now as the judges order forbids limewire itself to do so and will likely be expanded to cover third party distribution and also beware of the auto-update feature limewire has that can see them delete your fine working copy, archive now.

As another user here points out this will have zero affect and simply annoy more music lovers who feel the idea that you can hear something before buying it is the way most modern consumers operate, buying an artists output blind like in the old days is rather unappealing especially as some artists are burned out by the greed machine after a single hit, you wouldnt buy a car without inspecting it you wouldnt buy anything without inspecting it come to that so why would you purchase music in that way ?

  8. Devil's Advocate Says:

As usual, the oppressors are a few years behind in finding their targets.
This is fine with me, as this style of P2P needed to die off anyway, and Limewire had already become one of the top malware spreaders.

    Nope. Won’t miss it.
I can’t even remember the last time I even used this type of application.

  9. Robert R Says:

I didn’t know Limewire was still around or that anyone still used it, actually.

  10. RIAA Hater Says:

I used to like Limewire years ago, but it didn’t provide lossless music so I went to other forms of p2p. This is hardly a loss; the true power of p2p is only growing.

  11. Limey Says:

    Frostwire is a perfect replacement

  12. Redeye Says:

So what Limewire is Dead May it RIP but that’s not going to stop us from sharing files look out for another major source to come out for file sharing!
