‘Not us!’ – says Limewire of ‘Pirate Edition’
p2pnet view P2P:- Nothing to do with us, says the ‘official’ Limewire of the Limewire ’Pirate Edition’ fork that recently appeared online.
US judge Kimba Wood ruled LimeWire infringes copyright, and that was enough for Vivendi Universal, EMI, Warner Music and Sony Music’s RIAA to get it shut down.
It doesn’t consequently owe the Big 4 extortion unit $1.5 trillion, as we once hypothesised. But it may owe hundreds of millions.
Meanwhile, “To the vast majority of online music lovers, Limewire has been dead for a long time”, p2pnet posted a little while back, going on:
“But now it’s finally and officially offline, thanks entirely to the ministrations of the four most hated names in the world of corporate music — Vivendi Universal (France), Sony (Japan), EMI (Britain), and Warner Music (US, but controlled by Canadian Edgar Bronfman jr).
“But really, so what? The open source Limewire software has allowed all kinds of GPL look-alikes to spring up, and they’re still very much alive.”
Never a truer word, etc, etc,

So now that all of us old farts are around, few questions:
1. who the fuck are you?
2. you need to update the ivy dependencies or include the unit tests with the source. Right now the only way to build this thing is from eclipse
3. you need to run some UHCs or provide a gnutella.net
4. how are you going to maintain the hostile list w/o inspections?
5. how are you goint to keep the topology from fragmenting?
Now, “We have very recently become aware of unauthorized applications on the internet purporting to use the LimeWire name”, says LimeWire.
“We demand that all persons using the LimeWire software, name, or trademark in order to upload or download copyrighted works in any manner cease and desist from doing so [Their emphasis]. We further remind you that the unauthorized uploading and downloading of copyrighted works is illegal.”
And in the real world of online music, people are still sharing with each other just as they always have, and just as they always will.
Stay tuned.
