Once or twice a year is about where it's at.

Our disposable income was disposed of a long time ago. heh

On top of that, we're half-an-hour from the nearest cinema : )

Cheers!

i can appreciate what you say, but it isn't for me. i don't believe i'm missing out on anything, imho. and also imho, i'm gaining much more by not going to cinemas. and imho, the only ones suffering a "loss" are those who want my money. and they're not gonna get it.

disposable income? hah! that's a joke. it doesn't exist for me.
(and don't ask me how i can afford a larger tv. that is for me to know. :) )

I don't go to movies for pretty much the same reason, but I know me too well to rationalize a superiority complex out of it. Go to some overpriced feature on a Wednesday afternoon when you do have a little 'disposable' income, hide a warm canteen of weak Koolaid in your coat, and a baggie of homemade trail mix, or whatever. I do something similar once a year on a dead matinee for one reason. I do not have a 20' screen in my house, and I don't have enough 'disposable income' to set up a multi-thousand-dollar sound system that rocks the floor when something blows up. Those things continue to make money for a reason, and implying that everyone who enjoys a complete cinematic experience is some kind of lesser being is nothing short of reverse idiocy. Check it out, especially if you haven't gone in years. God, the first time I heard the sound check for a THX system in a full-size auditorium, I sat there in slack-jawed awe. That was worth the 7 bucks all by itself. What your post implies is contempt prior to investigation. Just go when nobody else does. It's worth it once or twice a year.
That's my story, and I'm stickin' to it.

for me, nothing is better than the peace, quiet and comfort of my own home. i have a large tv and surround sound stereo. and i'll be getting a larger tv later this year.

i don't regret not going to the cinema for these many years. but i regret having gone and had to experience all of the noise and discomfort of any-sized cinema.

there aren't very many large ones around anymore, but i must say that i have never enjoyed the "cinema experience" that some people crave.

Okay, I'm no fan of the MPAA and the big studios. May they rot in a custom hell of their own making... I agree with the basic tone of this story (exaggerated a bit IMHO, for effect I'm sure) and the posts so far, however, once in a blue moon I break my own rules and go to a real movie theatre. I mean a REAL movie theatre, not one of those puny 75 seat 27 screens under one roof type rat traps. I mean a big 300+ seat old school MOVIE theatre with one of those 40' wide screens (at least). That screen is the reason. There is no replacing or replicating that in the average living room. For instance, I went and saw the "Lord of the Rings" films at a big theatre in my town. Those movies are CINEMATIC (and pretty entertaining in my book). That experience just can't be shoe-horned into your avarage living room. I give the "entertainment mafia" very little of my money, but once in a while I do enjoy really filling up the ol' glass-balls with that big picture. I know I shouldn't do it, but every once in a great while... kinda like getting really drunk.

these are all valid reasons for why many people have stayed away from cinemas for years.

perhaps - and i don't know - less people are going to cinemas, but the cartels claim that box office sales are up and breaking records. how can that be if less people are going to the cinemas, as some cartel research shows? it's because they are constantly raising the ticket and snack bar prices. some cinemas "don't allow" you to bring in your own food. screw them. take a small knapsack or other private carry-on bag with you and fill it up with all your own private goodies. stuff your pockets with candy and sandwiches.

and it's not just the cartels that are to blame. it's also the cinema owners, insurance companies, real estate agencies, unions (if ushers, ticket sellers, cleaners and concession stand workers are in unions - in some countries they are), electric companies, heating/air conditioning companies, and on and on, each one passing the buck.

where does the buck stop? maybe - when this boycott is completed. maybe - some people will continue the boycott through the summer months.

renting a film also puts money into the fat wallets of the cartels. each time a film is rented, they get paid. so don't rent any films either. borrow from your friends. borrow from your library. don't give the cartels a cent.

maybe then they will stop passing the buck and start considering the customer.

I also hope he enjoys the price gouging of the concession stand, the lines, and the advertisements that come before the show that he paid for on his dime for the privilege of watching.

The ticket prices are also reaching the point of price gouging. I don't know about you but I remember as a kid that there were saturdays when you could go and watch a matinee at a reasonable price. A practice that has almost disappeared with this idea that "you owe them".

LOL! where are you - 1940's? do people still wear hats?

j/k...you're right. :)

i hope that "ANONYMOUS COWARD" who enjoys going to the cinema experiences all of these things, and that he also has to sit behind someone with a camera who is constantly having to readjust the tripod or having to stand up when someone goes in or out of the aisle.
