The Dual Duel: AMD v Intel
p2pnet.net News:- They’re calling it the dual duel. This is where AMD and Chipzilla duke it out, metaphorically, for the title Most Bought.
And the stakes are high because the battle will decide the, “next technology to power workstations, servers, desktops and notebooks for the next decade,” says PCMag.com explaining, “Dual core … gives the user a leg up when processing concurrent tasks, or using applications that have been written to take advantage of multiple-threaded processes.”
Now, "As part of the launch of its dual-core server chips, Advanced Micro Devices unveiled Thursday a new brand and accelerated the planned introduction of its dual-core chips for desktop computers," says The Street.
The Athlon 64 X2 is, "positioned between its gaming line of chips, the Athlon 64 FX, and its mainstream desktop line, the Athlon 64," says the report. "Notably, AMD’s product roadmap omits a dual-core rollout for its gaming chips. Williams, in a jab at Intel, said the need just isn’t there currently and that its single-core Athlon chips will still outperform Intel’s dual-core Pentium EE."
Not that this is terribly new news.
"The race between Intel and Advanced Micro Devices to be first to market with dual-core processors is about to come to a close," said PC World on April 8. "AMD is expected to introduce its first dual-core Opteron processors at an event in New York City scheduled for April 21, according to sources familiar with the company’s plans."
It also says, "But Intel has not stood still. Last week, the Santa Clara, California, company completed its move to 64-bit Xeon processors and it has pledged to begin shipping its first dual-core chips, the Pentium D and Pentium Extreme Edition 840, by the end of June."
In fact, the first PCs built around Intel’s dual-core Pentium processor are already out there.

Is this the same as hyperthreading where your pc sees 2 processors? If this is, I have had this for about a year and 3 months already.

Well, to put it simply. Kinda ;o)
Hypthreading is just taking advantage of the fact that with the intel cpu’s they can be spending a bit of time doing nothing waiting for data. So they make that cpu time “available” for other things. Yes it can provide a little boost when you’re doing more than one thing at a time. Ie running winamp or similar, downloading, and browsing, but not a big boost.
Having several real cpu’s or cores would provide a much bigger boost. I’ve got a dual cpu set up, 2 single cores, and i can unrar several gigs of stuff, listen to music, download, and browse without there being any noticeable impact on any single task ;o)
