Canadians: ‘Contact your MP!’

p2pnet.net News View:- The CRIA (Canadian Recording Industry Association of America) wants Canada’s Federal Court of Appeal to overturn a ruling under which its efforts to force ISPs to hand over the identies of 29 people accused of sharing music with each other were foiled.

It was, “yet another attempt to penalize music lovers rather than pursue avenues and embrace technology that would turn their customers into allies instead of foes,” wrote Saleem Khan on April 29.

The Canadian industry is not alone in this endeavour
By Saleem KhanMetroPoint

Yesterday, U.S. President George W. Bush signed into law a bill that stiffened penalties for those convicted of distributing music or movie video files over the Internet, and bolstered the movie industry’s ludicrous claim that it is losing millions of dollars to alleged pirates.

Tellingly, the signing ceremony occurred behind closed doors and Bush made no public announcement about it.

The nefarious people who are victimizing the industry that has reaped three years of increasing profits that surpass $9 billion US – $9.3 billion last year – sit in movie theatres with video camcorders, then sell the recordings to movie fans, the industry says.

Strange that the industry would go to the great and costly lengths to crack down on some guy with a video camera who may not exist at all, but fails to police themselves and those in the industry at reproduction houses, media relations offices and even the studios themselves who produce the high-quality copies that proliferate on the Internet.

This kind of deception is not to be taken lightly.

Last month, a raid on a Swedish Internet company on the basis of claims of unauthorized copying levelled by the movie and music industry lobby groups there turned out to be a set-up.

Media reports suggest that an industry employee uploaded massive volumes of movies and music to the server in order to facilitate the raid and chalk up a “win.”

These kinds of tactics insult and denigrate us all, and to no real purpose or end.

Take a page from these lobby groups and make your voice heard. Contact your MP.

(Thanks, TT)
