The whole business of manufacturing, selling, and taxing tobacco products is a classic case of "shit or get off the pot". Either something is legal to produce, or it isn't.

If it's legal, the safety of the product shouldn't be a question in the first place. If it's legal, there shouldn't be any kind of "stigma" attached to the product that causes anyone to be punished or taxed, be they the makers, the vendors, or the buyers, for whatever normal involvement they may have with that product. If it's legal, nobody should be able to govern the way the product is distributed or displayed.

If a product is not safe, it shouldn't be legal, and therefore, shouldn't be manufactured. Period. And, it certainly wouldn't be a major source of tax revenue, or something that causes billions of dollars to be wasted in dealing with all its "intricacies"

What's going on certainly doesn't fit into either of the above. Everyone's making money from addicted, over-charged, over-taxed consumers, while all other factors that should be forbidding this business model are being completely ignored by those who should be forbidding it.

No, this will work to some degree. It certainly won't hurt to improve the warnings (there is MUCH that could be done) and spearheading some no-holds-barred anti-smoking campaigns on the web and television will certainly not hurt either. The amount of money being spent on this stuff is minuscule in comparison to the potential savings.

Face it, while some of the more militant types would love to see executives in shackles, it is not something that is legally or politically possible at this time. Because of this, should we not do what we can within the bounds of the law to discourage people from starting this habit in the first place? Why not just get rid of the warnings entirely since we can't lop off the heads of tobacco executives and shareholders in town square?

Be reasonable.

BTW you'd be surprised how many people are indirect shareholders of tobacco companies. I'd bet most of the readers here holding mutual fund shares don't really know where their money lies. THERE'S a good story to follow. The average Joe with a pension or invested RRSPs has no idea what he is indirectly involved in.
