Apple admits 20 security holes

p2pnet.net News:- Behind news that Apple`s iTunes music `service` is a security risk comes an announcement that it`s released a major security update against ‘Bluesnarfing’ attacks for its Mac OS X 10.3.9 ‘Panther’ OS.

“Apple recommends all users install Security Update 2005-005, which protects Macs from unwanted ‘Bluesnarfing’, changing an existing system setting which meant that Bluetooth-capable Macs shipped with Bluetooth file exchange services enabled by default,” says Macworld.

“This meant files to be shared without properly notifying the user – a bluesnarfing vulnerability.”

Go here for more on this —- and 19 additional security flaws.

  1. Reader's Write Says:

what does that mean? what is bluesnarfing?

  2. Reader's Write Says:

Bluesnarfing is a method of hacking
    into a Bluetooth-enabled device…

    TT

  3. Reader's Write Says:

    ah ok, thanks.

now i think this finally shows the appleheads that bluetooth and apple sucks.

  4. Reader's Write Says:

Wow. Definitive proof that neither Windows nor Mac communities discrimnates against idiots.

The stupidity of comments on messageboards never ceases to amaze me.

  5. Reader's Write Says:

present company included, i’m sure. :)

btw, this isn’t a message board. it’s a news site where can people comment on the news and don’t call other commentators idiots.

i’m sure you must have something to say on this news item, so let’s hear it! everyone’s welcome. :-)

  6. Reader's Write Says:

Apple’s OSs don’t have security flaws. It’s obvious that the writer of this story doesn’t know what he’s talking about.

  7. Reader's Write Says:

c’mon, by your logic then neither does Windoze…to be technically accurate these are components (although not all of them are integral to the functioning of the OS, but some are in the lay-persons understanding of what an OS is understood to be) with flaws in them, these components comprise what is commonly perceived as an ‘OS’ by the general public…ie there is a flaw in the windows TCP/IP stack not the OS etc etc

    TT

“Apple’s OSs don’t have security flaws.”

Sorry, I can’t let that one go by. There is no doubt that at present Apple’s “OSs” has far less security issues than MS. However, IMHO making a blanket statment like that is just absurd. Apple’s PR must have some powerful detergent in it for a brain to come out of the wash so clean, so stain free…

  9. Reader's Write Says:

It was a joke, son. Laugh a little.

I didn’t mean it to be gospel truth. IMHO, it’s the user and the user’s knowledge of his/her machine that keeps a machine secure and happy.

  10. Reader's Write Says:

It’s not a news site, per se.

It’s a site with topical information pertaining to an interesting gamaut of issues, presented with owner’s and commentator’s heavy handed opinion. Which is fine – the sways and leanings of Jon are pretty transparent, he makes no ills to hide them and provides alot of information -gathered- from News Services and blogs.

And, sorry catflap, but you are a bit of an idiot – or more so, that ‘commentary’ you offered on this post was facile and idiotic.

As for Bluesnarfing being a critical hole (insert red flashing shit here mac users!!), Jon might want to look up the long, eventless history of Bluetooth hijacking and maybe focus / research into something else this “mega” 6mb patch is meant to address.

I’m still waiting for my Mega Windows patch – I think its called Longhorn, and apparently all my problems will just float away…
