Scouting with the MPAA: III

p2pnet.net News:- The corporate movie cartel is doing extremely well in its first efforts to forcefully penetrate yet another bastion of world society – the scouting movement.

Its MPA (Motion Picture Association) has succeeded in convincing the Hong Kong government that a copyright merit badge is an essential part of scouting.

The editor of an American scout site believes, however, that much of the reporting on the news is “horrible” and is “confusing people”.

Douglas Crets of The Standard, billed as China’s business paper, left a p2pnet Reader’s Write suggesting Dan, the editor of the US scout blog, might like to see his (Crets’) ‘merit badge’ story.

Crets quotes a Hong Kong Intellectual Property Department (IPD) spokeswoman as saying the 100,000 scouts in the Hong Kong Scouts Association, both adults and children, will take “proficiency seminars” throughout the year to, “familiarize themselves with issues involving intellectual property [IP] protection”.

Knowledge of IP law is, of course, absolutely essential for every scout.

The MPA set the IPD and Hong Kong Customs and Excise Department up as the front organizations and the idea was, “initially suggested by Victor Chan, a local Hong Kong Scouts leader, in early January, said the IPD spokeswoman,” according to Crets’ story.

It also quotes IPD Stephen Selby as saying the IPD, “has been promoting the concept of IPR protection via formal classroom tuition”.

The Hong Kong scouts’ copyright program, “can provide young people with an alternative, informal education about protecting IP in an interesting and interactive way.”

Stay tuned.

is the mpaa trying to build an army of chinese boyscouts? XD

  2. Reader's Write Says:

Its interesting the MPAA has done this in a country with limited democracy. I think speaks volumes about their methods.

  3. Reader's Write Says:

Americans no longer respect the Big Music industry, especially after the bs propaganda and suits against families and children.

If the BSA ever took on the bs, many of us would drive them “out of town”, period.

“Knowledge of IP law is, of course, absolutely essential for every scout”
Yeah, so much so that it makes me wonder still, whats it got to do with Scouting?
They actually expect people to attend these things as well?

  5. Reader's Write Says:

” The corporate movie cartel is doing extremely well in its first efforts to forcefully penetrate…”
